To all lwhom tt may concern:
Be it known that l, Anno Bonannn, merchant, a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at No. 27 Meissenerstrasse, Briessnitz, near Dresden, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Elastic Tires for Vehicles; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to elastic tires for vehicles, more particularly for automobiles, and consists of tire-units which may be placed one by one into a channeled wheelrim and interchangeably held therein. Each Atire-unit is composed of a rubber-body which preferably consists of two hemispheres integrally connected with each other and carrying between them a fasteningplate.
ln the accompanying` drawing :-ll`igurc l is an elevation of a tire-unit before its attachment to the wheel-rim. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same tire-unit seated in the wheel-rim, in which the inner half or hemisphere of the tire-unit is compressed, and wherein a sutiicient lateral space is provided to permit a lateral swelling out of the inner hemisphere, when the tire-unit is put under full pressure. ilig. 3 is a liilan-view of a fastening-plate.
The tire-unit preferably consists of the two hemispheres 2 and 3 integrally connected with each other and held by means of the cross-shaped plate l to the wheel-rim 4t made of ieri-shaped channel-iron. The hemispher-es 2 and 3 are composed of an elastic material, such as rubber.
In order to secure or fasten the two h-cmispheres to the wheel-rim a, the plate l is preferably made of steel and has the shape of a St. Andrews cross with a central opening 5 for the passage of one part of the rnbber-mass which connects both hemispheres in a thorough manner. @ther connecting parts of said hemispheres 2 and 3 are situated at G, 7, 8 and 9 respectively, as will be best seen in Fig. 3, wherein the circular shape of the hemispheres is indicated by the broken circular line l0. In this manner both hemispheres are thoroughly connected with each other and with the plate l. The hemisphere 3 lies within the particularly shaped wheel-rim d whereas the hemisphere 2 forms a part of the tread of the wheel.
To attach the tire-unit to the wheel-rim e, the corners of the cross-shaped plate l are placed under the inturned flanges 11 and l2 of the rim t in such a manner that the plate l has no side-play within the rim, so that there is no possibility that the rubber-hemispheres 2 and 3 can accidentally leave the wheel-rim.
The cross-sectional shape of the rim t is so chosen that at both sides of the hemisphere 25 sullicient play is provided at 13 to give the rubber-masses of said hemispheres a chance to swell out or expand to the best advantage and without resistance when the load is supported by the tire-units.
To prevent a too great resilience of the rubber-components of the tire-unit and at the same time make them more suitable for the reception of knocks and blows, the hemispheres which are arranged within the wheel-rim are preferably compressed, which can be accomplished by making the hollow space of the rim a less in depth than the height of the lower hemisphere, as shown in Fig. 2.
lt is evident that first one and then the other of the hemispheres may be used as a part of the wheel-tread by turning the tire-unit end for end.
This peculiar construction of the wheeltire permits of the employment of a rubbermixture wherein a great amount of Pararubbcr is contained, by which means the life of the individual tire-units is lengthened very considerably.
