Be it known that I, CHARLES F. Fnnronn a subject 'of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bails, of which the following is a specification. i

This invention relates to bails or handles for lanterns or other devices.

One object of the invention is to produce a bail which may be used in the ordinary manner in carrying the lantern, and which may also be used in connection with a nail, or other supporting device projecting in substantially-horizontal position from a wall or post, in such a manner as to support the lantern in vertical position and away from or post.

' Another object of the invention is to produce a bail which is adapted for supporting a. lantern, or other device, by engagement with a belt or other portion of the apparel of a person carrying the device.

To the above ends the invention consists in a bail provided substantially at its middleportion with suitable abutments adapted to engage supporting means of the kind above referred to in such a manner as to hold the device in the required position.

The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mid-' dlc portion of the bail, showing the peculiar formation by which the present invention is embodied therein; l ig. 2 is a plan view of the part of the bailshown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the bail and a lantern to which it is secured; and Fig. 4 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 3, showing the bail mounted upona nail projecting from a wall and supporting the lantern at a distance from the wall. I The illustrated embodiment of the invention is a-bail formed of a single piece of wire and the same, in general form, as the bails ordinarily employed in connection with lanterns. The body portion 1 of -the bail is pivoted at its ends '2 to a lantern in theusual manner.

The portions of the wire which are bent from the body of the bail to form the arm 3 are not united throughout, but have in= clined portions 5 which form a. recess 6 between them, and these inclined portions of the bail constitute an abutment to en agela nail or other supporting device resting iii the recess 6. The loop 4 also constitutes an abutment for such supporting device. When the lantern is to be supported upon a nail or pin projecting from a wall orv 0st, the bail is moved into substantially horizontal position, and the loop 4 is passed over the end of the nail. Thelantern is'now sup ported as shown in Fig. 4, the 100 the upper side of the nail while t engages the lower side of the nail, so that the bail is prevented from swin ing downward from horizontal position. 11 this manner the lantern is held at a considerable distance from the wall or post from whichthe'nail projects so as to permit the lantern to swing reely in any direction and maintain its ver tical position, and so also as to minimize the danger from fire which is present where the lantern is allowed to hang directly in contact with a wall or post. i I

Where the lantern is to be carried by the user the arm 3 constitutes a convenient de-' vice for securing the bail to the belt, .or similar portion of the wearers apparel. "For this purpose the arm is merely inserted within the belt, and the lantern will then hang from this point while the loop 4 engages the belt in such a manner as to insure against accidental displacement of the bail from the belt.

While my invention is most conveniently and economically constructed of a single iece of wire in the manner above described, it is not limited to such embodiment, but may be embodied in various forms within the nature of the'invention as it is defined in the following claims.
