ANDREW VALLEM, OF RUTHTON, MINNESOTA.
WIRE STRETCI-IER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW VALLEM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ruthton, in the county of Pipestone and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful l/Vire-Stretcher; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
The invention relates to improvements in wire stretchers andhas for its object to provide an improved device of this character capable of stretching one, two or three, or more wires at a time.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved wire stretcher of this class having means for stretching one or a plurality of individual wires for fences, and which is equally adapted for stretching what is known as woven wire fences.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wire stretcher constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the two vertically disposed members through which extends a Windlass 3. Also disposed between the members 1 and 2 is a block 41, with which a chain 5 is connected for securing the wire stretcher to a post or the like when the operation of wire stretching is to begin.
The Windlass 3 is provided with a ratchet wheel 6, which is engaged by a dog 7 for 'locking the Windlass when the desired tension has been reached, in the stretching of the wires.
The dog 7 is held in engagement with the ratchet wheel 6 by means of a spring 8, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. An inner block is also disposed between the members 1 and 2, and on the upper face thereof three arms 10, 11 and 12 are provided. The arm 10 is L-shaped, as shown, and has a vertically extending portion 13,

and the arms 11 and 12 are connected thereto, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, thus forming a ri id combination of the three arms. Each of these arms is provided with a pair of swiveled U-shaped frames 14 and 15, in which is mounted a pulley 16. These frames are swiveled for the purpose of permitting the same to conform to the action of the chains, of which there are three, 16, 17 and 18, as they travel over the Windlass when being wound and being unwound.
Each chain is connected with the Windlass and passes over two pulleys 14 and 15, and thence through an aperture 19 in the vertical portion 18 of the arm 10.
The outer ends of the chains are preferably provided with snap hooks 20, so that the terminals of the chains may be readily connected with the clamp for stretching woven wire fences, or with the clamp for stretching individual wires.
WVhat is claimed is 1. A wire stretcher of the class described, comprising a frame, a Windlass carried thereby, arms connected to said frame and having their inner ends rigidly connected together, each of said arms being provided with a U-shaped swiveled frame, pulleys carried by said frame, flexible members 0011- nected with said Windlass and said pulleys, and means for connecting said flexible members with the wire to be stretched.
2. In a wire stretcher having a Windlass, the combination of a plurality of arms, one of the arms having a vertically projecting portion connected with the other arms, pulleys mounted on each arm, said vertically projecting portion being provided with a plurality of apertures, flexible members connected with said Windlass and extending through said apertures and over said pulleys, one end of said flexible members being connected with means for engaging wires.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ANDRElV VALLEM.
