JAMES PHILLIPS, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
BARREL-PAINTING MACHINE.
erases.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910.
Application filed May 13, 1910. Serial No. 561,245.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Painting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to barrel painting machines, and has for an object to provide a series of brushes arranged to be engaged with the surfaces of the barrel and to provide revoluble gripping members for supporting the barrel in position to be engaged by the brushes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a supporting member which is arranged directly beneath the gripping members and positioned with respect thereto so as to support the painted barrel after the latter has been released from the gripping members.
In the drawings, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved barrel painting machine. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section through the machine showing the gripping members in their released positio-ns and showing the barrel sup ports in a position to support the barrel upon release therefrom of the gripping members.
My improved painting machine consists of a frame 1 which supports a horizontally disposed paint receptacle 2. Immediately above the said receptacle the frame supports slidably mounted gripping members 3 and 4 each of which being formed to provide a shoulder 5 its tension for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The gripping member 3 is formed preferably to provide a relatively sharp pointed portion 7 which is adapted to be engaged with the central portion of one head of the barrel A which is illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings. The member 4 is formed to provide a claw-like portion 8 which is designed to engage the opposite head of the barrel.
The gripping member 4 is provided with a fixed pulley 9 and a loose pulley 10 which are located in line with companion pulleys on the drive shaft 11. Upon reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be seen that the fixed pulleys are connected by a belt against which a spring 6 exerts drive 12. One end of the power shaft 11 'is provided with a pulley 13 which may be geared to any suitable motor so that the desired power can be transmitted to the member 4 to rotate the barrel. The member 4 is provided with a handle 14 which is nor mally engaged through the tension of the spring on said member with a retainer 15. The member 3 is provided with a similar handle 16 which is designed to be engaged normally with the retainer 17. It will be understood that under tension of the springs 6 on the gripping members 3 and 4 the said members can be effectively engaged with the heads of the barrel to hold the latter supported at a point immediately above the paint receptacle.
A shaft 18 is supported by the frame, and as illustrated, it has mounted thereon levers 19 and 20. The lever 19 is connected by means of a cable 21 or the equivalent thereof with a pivotally mounted brush 22 which extends transversely of the frame 1 and in position to be engaged with one head of the barrel. The just described lever is provided with a controlling cable 23 which is adapted to be manually manipulated to move the brush to its operative po--- sition. The construction of the brush 22 is such that it is normally positioned in the paint receptacle. The lever 20 is connected by a cable 24 with a pivoted brush 25 which is similar to the brush 22 and designed to be engaged with the opposite end or head of the barrel. This lever is provided with a controlling cable 25 which is identical with the cable 23 hereinbefore described.
A support 26 is carried by the frame 1 and it consists of companion members 27 which are pivoted to the frame and which extend transversely thereof and at a point immediately below the opposing ends of the gripping members 3 and 4. The members 27 are connected with each other by rods 28 and a pivoted link 29. The link 29 is operatively connected with a controlling member 30 with which is associated and operatively connected an actuating lever 31. The lever 31 as shown herein is such that it can be manipulated to move the members 27 of the support to positions immediately beneath the ends of the barrel so that after the painting operation the gripping members 3 and 4 can be released from the heads of the barrel to permit the latter to rest upon the support.
A foot lever 32 is pivoted to the front side of the frame 1 and as illustrated, it is operatively connected with a pivoted brush 33. This brush extends longitudinally of the frame and is adapted to be engaged with the staves of the barrel. The construction of the herein described barrel painting machine is extremely simple, it may be manufactured at. a relatively low cost and the barrels may be painted rapidly and at a comparatively low cost.
I claim 1. A barrel painting machine comprising companion gripping members adapted to be yieldingly engaged with the barrel, one of the said gripping members being mounted for rotary movement, driving means for revolving the said gripping members, a barrel support located beneath the gripping members and adapted to support the barrel upon release of the gripping members therefrom, a paint receptacle located beneath the gripping members, and movable brushes nor- 2. A barrel painting machine comprising a paint receptacle, barrel gripping members designed to support the barrel for rotary movement at a point immediately above the said paint receptacle, a support comprising movable members adapted to be extended beneath the barrel and to receive and support the same upon release from the barrel of the said gripping members, and movable brushes designed for movement into the said paint receptacle and adapted to be moved into contact with the barrel upon rotation thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
