WATER-EEATERPOR CULINARY PURPOSES.-
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent makingpaxt ot' the same.
To all whom, it may concernr Be it known that I, ROYAL Dnnnn, of Brook. lyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new-and useful Water-Heater for Culinary Purposes and that'thefollowing is a full, clear, and correct descriptionof the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the lettersofreference marked thereon, in'which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved waterheater.- f

The nature of the present inyention consists in the construction of .an improved water-heater for culinary purposes, as more fully hereinafter set forth, the object of the invention being to utilize the steam, formed by boiling thewater contained in the vessel, so that a supply of boiling water may be forced from the heater into a contiguous vessel; or drawn from it when ,desired.
To enable those skilled in. the art to make and use my invention, I'willdescribe its construction 'and operation.
A is a cylinder, formed of copper or any suitable metal, which cylinder is closed at its lower end, and
is provided with a cover, B, secured tightly upon its top or upper end, so that the cylinder A shall. be steam-tight The cylinder A-h'as an opening cut in it, which opening extends very nearly from the bottom to the top of the same, and is closed with a plate of glass, or any transparent material, 0.
This opening is generally made in the side of the cylinder, and upon one side'ot' this opening is placed a scale, D, (see fig. 4,) numberedfrom one (1) upward to any extent, according to the size of the cylinder, and showing, as more fully hereinafter described, the number of pints or quarts that may pass from the cyl-' inder into any vessel with which the same maybe connected.
E shows a funnel, inserted in the top B, and communicating with a pipe, F, which pipe extends very nearly to the bottom of the cylinder A.
In one side of the funnel is inserted a pipe, G, made to communicate with a second vessel, into which it may be desired to transfer boiling water from the cylinder A. In the top of the cylinder is inserted a steam-cock, H; and
I is apipe connecting the cylinder A with a water- 'pipe or reservoir.
J shows a cock or faucet inserted in the lower end of the cylinder A, for drawing off, whennecessary, boiling water from the heater, whichcock or faucet is connected-to a bent pipe, K, communicating withthe interior of the cylinder A.

Such being the construction, the operation may be thus described:
The heater-A- is filled with water by opening the cook '11, to allow the airto escape, and pouring'waterinto the same through the funnel E, or. through the' pipe I, connected, as alreadystated, with a water-pipe or reservoir. p I
If the water be poured into the funnel E, it enters ,t'he cylinder, through the pipe F; and if supplied through thepipel, it passes through the perforated plate ordisk of metal. 7
When the cylinder has been filled to the height of the scale D, the cock H is closed, and the heater is placed over a fire or over steam-pipes.
As soon as the watercontained in the cylinder boils,
and steam is formed, this steam acts upon the boiling in the cylinder A, a supply of cold water may be intro'duced into the same through the pipe I,,which water will pass into the interior of the cylinder A, through the perforated disk or plate of metal L, and be showered, as it were, upon the boiling water, serving to condense the steam containedtherein.

serves to indicate the exact quantity of boiling water.
which has passed off, or been drawn from the heater. The steam-cock H, when opened, allows the escape of steam at any time.
The value of the present invention will be found to .consist in the'fact' that the steam formed by the water boiling in the vessel is utilized, and made'to force a body of boiling water into a vessel contiguous to the heater, and that the person using the heater may 'feel assured that only boiling water has been so forced into the contiguous vessel connected with the heater, and by consulting the scale, can determine the exact quantity which has been'consumed, and that the steam will also-force boiling water through the pipe K, to supply the faucet I.
This feature, when the heater is connected with a coffee or tea-urn, will he found advantageous, while the arrangement for condensing the steam at ah'y time is a second advantage.
While I have shown the pipe F as placed within the cylinder A, I am well aware that this pipe F will accomplish the same result if placed outside 'the cylinder A, and allowed to enter the bottom or sides of the cylinder A. In this case, the pipe G would be conneote with the pipe F, at or near its upper end.
Having thus described my present invention,
What I claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. So constructing a water-heater for culinary purposes, that the steam rising from the water boiling in the heater, shall force any desired quantity of boiling water out of said heater and into 'a contiguous vessel, properly connected with the heater, when the same shall be constructed substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a steam-tight cylinder, A, of the pipes F and G, when the same shall be constructed and operate substantially as and for the purposes set orth.
' 3. In combination with the subject-matter of the second clause of claims, the steam-cock H, pipe I, and perforated plateor disk L, constructed and ,operating as and for the purposes'specified.
'4. The combination, with-a steam-tight cylinder, A, provided with the pipes F and G, of a measuring-scale D, as and for the purposes fully described. 3
