JEFFERSON I). FUGA'IE, F MORRILL, NEBRASKA.
COMBINED SHIPPING-TAG AND INVOICE-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910.
Application filed March 16, 1910. Serial No. 549,623.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J nrrnnson D. FUGATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrill, in the county of Scotts Bluff and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Conibined Shipping-Tag and Invoice-Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This *invention relates to' combined shipping tags and invoice holders, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple device for connection to shipping crates, boxes, cases or poultry coops to serve as a shipping tag and to hold the invoice or bill of the goods safely inclosed within the holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metal tag and casing for holding a book of instructions and providing a metal tag and name plate to be placed upon agricultural implements, wagons and all kinds of'machinery, so that the person receiving the article or device may have the benefit of a full descriptive pamphlet relating tothe manner bf setting up and operating the machine or implement.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a combined metal shipping tag and invoice holder which will securely hold a bill or'pamphlct against injury during shipment and which will be readily accessible only to the person. to which the shipment is made and which after the cover has been removed from the holder, the latter will be available as a name plate for the manufacturer or for the owner of the vehicle, implement or device.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined shipping tag and invoice holder secured to a box or case for shipment, said shipping tag and invoice holder being made in accordance with my invention and provided with a seal to prevent tampering with the device during shipment. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the holder after the cover plate or tag member has been removed therefrom. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line H of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view looking at the inner side of the cover forming the shipping tag, said cover being removed from the invoice holder.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1,
in Fig. 1, designates a box or case to which the combined shipping tag and invoice holder is secured, and 2 is a base plate, preferably made of sheet metal and secured to the box or case 1, by means of suitable tags or fasteners 3, preferably driven through holes in, said plate and into the box or case. The opposite edges of theplate 2 are bent to form guideways 5 for a sliding metal tag plate and cover 6. The plate (3 is provided v with inwardly bent flanges 7 adapted to slide in the guideways 5. The base plate 2 at one endis provided with a bent lip 8 having a central slot 9 to receive the lug 10 formed upon one end of the cover plate 6. At the opposite end of the plate 2 a latch keeper 11 is formed centrally upon the plate, said latch keeper adapted to extend through an opening 12 in the cover plate 6.
Pivoted at 13 upon the cover plate 6 is a latch 1%, preferably provided with a hook to engage the latch keeper 11, said latch having a finger hold 15 for operating the same, The lug 10 is provided with a perforation 16 to accommodate a wire seal 17 said wire seal being passed through the keeper l1 and provided with a soft metal seal 18 connected to the wires to prevent withdrawal of the cover plate 6 without destroying the seal. The latch keeper 11 is formed on a portion 19 bent from the end of the base plate 2. A finger hold .20 is formed on the cover plate or tag 6.
The manner of using the device may be briefly described asfollows: The tag 6 is provided with the name of the shipper and the address of the consignee. Placed within the holder formed by the base plate 2 is an invoice or pamphlet a. The tag or cover plate 6 is then slid in place to cover the invoice or pamphlet and the lug 10 is extended through the slot 9, after which the latch 14 is swung upon its pivot to engage the latch keeper 11 to hold the tag plate 6 in place. If itis desired the wire seal 17 may be used to preventany unauthorized person from removing the bill or pamphlet.
\Vhen the combined shipping tag and holder -is used upon agricultural implements, vehicles or similar devices after the tag plate 6 has been removed, the base plate 2 may be used as a. name plate to give the name of the owner and the name of the manufacturer.
a combined shipping tag and holder made in accordance with my invention, can be manufactured cheaply of sheet metal, can he made practically water proof and will serve to carry the bill of goods shipped or a pamphlet giving instruction in relation to the manner of setting up or operating the implement or machine.
The cost of production is but slight and the holder and tag is practically indestructible.
Having thus fully described the invention What is claimed as'new is:
The herein described shipping tag and invoice holder comprising a base plate having its edges bent to form guide-Ways, a
sliding tag plate and cover having guides at its edges to connect the same with the base plate, said tag plate and cover having errata an opening therein, and said base plate hav- .ing a latch keeper adapted to project through said opening, a latch pivoted to said tag plate to engage said latch keeper, said base plate having a lip at one end, said lip having a central. slot therein, said tag plate and cover having a perforated lug extending through said slot, and a Wire seal connected to said lug and extending through said latch keeper, said Wire seal being provided with a compressible element to prevent Withdrawal of the Wire seal from said latch keeper.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
