To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN T. OLrsHUM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sole and Heel Plates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to sole and heel plates, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a sole and heel plate that can be easily and quickly attached to a shoe, boot or other foot-wear for preventing a person from slipping and falling upon smooth, frozen and inclined surfaces.

Another object of this invention is to provide a combined sole and heel plate that can be folded and placed in the pocket, the fastening means used in connection with the sole plate permitting of the same being removed from the pocket and attached to the shoe when slippery surfaces are encountered.

A still further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a sole and heel plate that is simple in construction, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efiicient for the purposes for which it is intended.

With these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter appear the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing forming part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof can be varied or changed, as to the size and shape, without departing from the spirit of the appended claim.

In the drawings :F igure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe provided with the sole and heel plate. Fig. 2 is a plan of a detached sole and heel plate, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the same.

In the accompanying drawings the reference numeral 1 denotes a sole-shaped metallic plate provided with an instep portion 2 ter minating in an extension 3, which is bent upon itself to form a transverse barrel 4:. Revolubly mounted in the barrel l is a pin 5 and mounted upon the ends of said pin are the barrels 6, carried by the upwardly bent ends 6 of a U-shaped plate 7 Specification of Letters Patent.

The sole plate 1 is cut away, as at 8, to reduce the weight of the same and save material, and the side edges of the sole plate, adjacent to the toe thereof are provided with vertical lugs 9. Riveted 'or otherwise connected to the lugs, as at 10 are straps 11 and 12, the former being apertured, as at 13, whereby it can be connected to a buckle 14, carried by the strap 12. The straps 11 and 12 are employed as a fastening means for retaining the sole plate upon a shoe 15, the straps extending over the toe of the shoe.

The U-shaped heel plate which is adapted to engage the bottom of the heel 16 has the rear end thereof provided with vertical lugs 17, and the upper ends of these lugs are bent inwardly to provide prongs 18 adapted to engage in the heel 16 and retain the rear end of the plate upon the heel.

I The lugs 17 are provided with openings 17 whereby straps can be attached to said lugs to retain the heel plate in engagement with the heel, should the prongs 18 be accidentally broken.

The sole plate 1 and the heel plate 7 are provided with rivets 19 having the lower ends thereof provided with pointed heads 20, while the upper ends of said rivets have flat heads 21.

Suitably mounted upon the sole and heel plates is asbestos, cork or a non-conductive material 22. This non-conductive material is adapted to protect a foot and prevent cold, dampness and even heat from aHecting a foot through the sole or heel. The nonconductive material also prevents electricity from entering the feet of workmen employed in electrical power plants. The pointed heads 20 provide prongs adapted to engage the smooth surface and prevent the plates from slipping. The sole and heel plates 1 and 7 are provided with a plurality of openings 8", whereby wooden blocks or plugs of non-fusible material can be connected to said plates, to prevent the shoes of millmen being injured by heated plates forming the floor of the mill. When the combined sole and heel plates are fastened upon a shoe the extension 3 is adapted to engage in the forward side of the heel, as at 23, thus retaining the instep portion 2 of the plate in engagement with the instep portion of the shoe 15.

Through the medium of the barrel 4, pin 5 and barrels 6, the plates 1 and 7 can be folded, it being preferable to fold the heel plate 7 over the instep portion 2 of the plate 1.

Having now described my invention what I claim, is

Combined sole and heel plates comprising a. sole plate having its inner portion provided with a centrallydisposed extension adapted to engage in the top of the forward part of the heel of a shoe when the plate is mounted against the sole of the shoe, a U-shaped heel plate having a portion of each of its arms bent at right angles with respect to the remaining portion and engaging the inner end of the arch of the shoe, said angularly disposed portions of the heel plate arranged one at each side of said extension, means extending through the free terminus of each of the angularly extending portions of the heel plate and connected with said extension intermediate its ends for pivotally connecting the two plates together, spaced vertically-disposed lugs carried at the rear portion of the edge of the heel plate and having their tops bent to provide inwardly extending prongs adapted to engage in the heel and cooperate with said extension for retaining the heel. plate in position, protuberances upon the underside of each of said plates, and means connected with the forward end of the sole plate for coupling it with a shoe whereby said plate is maintained in position.
