NIPPLE-COVER.

Application filed. September 10, 1910. Serial No. 581,378.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. LADLEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ingram, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nipple-Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a nipple cover, and the primary object of the invention is to provide means as will be hereinafter set forth for protecting the nipple of a nursing bottle and preventing flies, insects, dust or dirt from infecting or injuring the nipple when not in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a nipple cover that can be easily and quickly applied to the ordinary type of nursing bottle for inclosing the nipple, the
cover being easily opened to permit of a child using the nipple.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein :-Figure 1 is an elevation of the nipple cover in a closed position, Fig. 2 is a similar view of the nipple cover in an open position, Fig. 3 is a plan of the cover, Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional View of the same, Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same, and Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view of the cover.
In the drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes a portion of a nursing bottle having the neck or mouth 2 thereof provided with an ordinary nipple 3. Detachably mounted upon the neck or mouth 2 is a resilient ring 1 adapted to engage under the rim 5 of the neck 2, said ring having the inner walls thereof beveled, as at 6 to snugly fit the under edge of the rim 5.
7 denotes two semi-cylindrical cover sections, said sections intermediate the lower edges thereof being attached or formed in tegral with the ring l, as at 8 and these sections intermediate the vertical edges thereof are provided with vertical reinforcing ribs 9 adapted to add rigidity to said sections. The upper edges of the cylindrical sections 7 are inclined from a point intermediate the vertical edges thereof to the vertical edges, as at 10 and formed integral with the apex of each section is a segmentshaped section 11, said section having ribs 12 formed integral with the ribs 9. The sections 11 are adapted to close the upper end of the sections 7 and the said sections 11 have the upper confronting edges thereof provided with lateral extensions 13.
The cover in its entirety is made of light and durable rubber and the resiliency of the same is adapted to'retain the cover in a closed position over the nipple 3 of the bottle. To open the cover, the extensions 13, which serve functionally as handles, can be swung outwardly until the sections 7 are moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, permitting of the nipple 3 being used. The position of the section 11 at the right hand side of Fig. 2 indicates the resiliency of the cover, insomuch that the section 11 rebounds when released and then assumes the position similar to the section 11 at the left hand side of Fig. 2. The lateral extensions 13 protect the upper end of the cover and prevent an infant from mistaking the cover as a nipple.
What I claim is 1. A nipple cover for nursing bottles, comprising a ring adapted to frictionally engage the neck of the bottle, semi-cylindrical sections having the lower edges thereof connected to said ring, segment-shaped sections connected to the upper edges of said semi-cylindrical sections and adapted to form the upper end of said cover, and lateral extensions carried by the confronting edges of said segment-shaped sections.
2. A nipple cover for nursing bottles, comprising a ring, semi-cylindrical sections connected to said ring, segment-shaped sections movably connected to said semi-cylindrical sections and adapted to close the upper ends of said sections, and means carried by said segment-shaped sections to facilitate the opening of said sections.
3. A nipple cover comprising semi-cylindrical sections, segment-shaped sections movably connected to the upper edges of said semicylindrical sections and adapted to form the top of said cover, and lateral extensions carried by said segment-shaped sections.
