To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, JAMES CEvAsoo, a subject of the King of Italy, and NICHOLAS J. CAVAGNARO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, and CONRAD AM- BRETTE, asubject of the King of Italy, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements .in Wire Twisting and lVeaving Machines; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The present invention has reference, gen erally, to machines for twisting or forming wire into spirals and interweaving the same together to form woven bed-springs or the like; and the invention relates more particularly to an automatic and adjustable stop mechanism for such machines.
Our present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide, in a machine of the character above stated, an automatic stop mechanism adapted to stop the operation of the machine so that successive spirals of wire, as they are fed from the twisterdies, shall terminate exactly at the same point to bring their ends respectively in alinement one with another. The purpose of such a stop mechanism is to save material, and also to save the time, labor, and annoyance expended in trimming the spirals to exact length so as to bring their ends in alinement one with another.
A further object of our present invention is to provide, in connection with said auto matic stop mechanism, a means for timing and regulating the operation of said stop mechanism to produce spiral sections of wire of different lengths, to produce a woven wire spring of different sizes.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the same.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel automatic stopmechanism, and the means for regulating and adjusting the same hereinafter set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which is appended to and which forms an essential part of the said specification.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation of the feeding side of a wire twisting and weaving machine embodying our present invention; and Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite or delivery side of said machine. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section taken on line 3-3 in Fig. 2, but drawn upon an enlarged scale. In this view the automatic stop mechanism, embodying the principles of our present invention is illustrated in one of its regulated and adjusted positions when the clutch mechanism is thrown into operative driving relation with the main driving shaft of said machine. Fig. i is a view similar to that shown in Fig. 3, except that here the automatic stop mechanism has operated so as to disengage the clutch mechanism from its operative driving-relation with the main driving shaft to stop the operation of said machine. Fig. 11 is a detail plan view of one end of said wire twisting and weaving machine showing more particularly a wire passing through its twisting die and intermeshing with Wire already twisted in the method of making the woven wire.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring, now, to the several figures of the accompanying drawings, the referencecharacters 1 and 1 are grooved feed rollers mounted on parallel shafts 2 and 2, said shafts being operatively connected by gearwheels 3 and 3, and 4 indicates a feed die by means of which wire 43 is fed between said feed- rollers 1 and 1, and 5 is a spirally- .grooved twister-die to which the said wire is fed by said rollers 1 and 1 and by which it'is twisted or formed into spirals 44, each spiral as it is delivered from said twisterdie 5 being engaged and interwoven with the next preceding spiral. The reference character 6 is a clutch pulley loosely mounted on said shafts 2, and 7 is a clutch-cone rigidly secured upon said shaft 2, said clutch-pulley and clutch-cone being of any suitable construction whereby the said shafts 2 and 2 may be operated at will, as subsequently explained.
The parts thus far described are or may be similar to corresponding parts of other machines of this class, as heretofore constructed.
The reference-character 8 indicates a longitudinally slidable shaft, the same being provided with a fixed collar 9 against which is exerted the tension of a coil-spring 10, arranged between said collar and the framework of the machine, for the purpose of maintaining and returning said slidable shaft 8 to its normal initial position. Secured upon said slidable shaft 8 is forked arm 11 the forked end of which engages a grooved-hub 12, preferably forming an integral part of said clutch-pulley 6, the same being adapted to shift. said clutch-pulley into its operative engagement with said clutch-cone 7 when said forked arm 11 is shifted by the movement of said slidable shaft 8.
Pivotally mounted in convenient location on the framework of the machine is a bellcrank lever 13 the forked end 14 of which is pivotally connected with said slidable shaft 8. This said bell-crank lever 13 may be connected by a suitable link'to a foot treadle by means of which the same may be operated to shift forward said slidable-shaft 8, and thus throw in the clutch mechanism, or said bell-crank lever may be operated in any other suitable manner.
Pivoted in a suitable location upon the frame work of the machine is a latch-member 15, the same being provided with a forwardly extending tongue 16,which is adapted to engage a notch or cut out portion 17 in said slidable shaft 8 so as to hold said shaft 8 in its forwardly moved position, and
through the intermediate mechanism above described maintain the said clutch-mechanism in its thrown-in or operative condition. Secured to the tail piece of said latch-members 15 is a coil-spring 18, the opposite end of which is secured suitably to a portion of the frame-work of the machine. This said spring 18 maintains said latch-member in operative contact with said slidable shaft 8. Secured in a suitable location upon the base of said machine is a bearing standard 19 provided with a bearing 20. Loosely mounted in said bearing 20 is the journal hub 21 of a worm wheel 22. This said worm-wheel 22 meshes with and is driven by a worm 22 secured upon said shaft 2. Loosely arranged within and extending longitudinally through said wormwheel 22 and a portion of said bearing 20 is a short shaft 23, provided at one end with a disk portion 24, arranged to fit within a correspondingly countersunk space 25 in the outer face of said worm wheel 22. The said disk portion 24 and a part of said short shaft 23 adjacent thereto is provided with a plurality of radiating splits or cuts 26. Said disk-portion 24 and the part of said short shaft 23 adjacent thereto is also provided with a centrally disposed counter-bore 27 adapted to receive a wedge-pin 28 slidably arranged therein. Secured upon the opposite end of said short shaft 23 is a grooved pulley wheel 29, the same being provided upon its inner face with an outwardly projecting lug or stop 30. A cord or similar flexible support 31 is connected with said pulley-wheel 29 and rides in the groove thereof. Suspended by the said cord or flexible support 31 is a weight 32. Movably arranged upon the outer surface of a portion of said bearing 20 is a collar or ring 33, the same being provided upon its outer face with a lug or stop 34 adapted to be normally engaged by the above mentioned lug or stop 30 connected with said pulley wheel 29. Said collar or ring 33 is also provided with suitable set-screws 35 by means of which the same may be set or secured in any desired adjusted ,position in order to fix the position of its lug or stop 34 for the purpose hereinafter to be explained. Secured to said disk-portion 24 of said short shaft 23 and projecting from the outer face thereof is a pin 36. Secured upon said slidable shaft 8, so as to pass transversely there through, is a. set-screw 37 adapted to be adjusted and locked in its adjusted position by the nut 38 to provide an outwardly projecting pin 37' extending toward the outer face of said worm-wheel 22. Pivotally mounted in a suitable location upon the frame-work of the machine is a rock-lever 39, the same being provided with an arm 40 which projects through an opening or perforation 41 in the tail-piece of said latchmember 15, and extends outwardly from the end of the machine adjacent to said feedrollers 1 and 1, an opening being provided in the frame-work of the machine to permit its passage therethrough if thesame is necessary. Said rock-lever 39 is further provided with an oppositely extending arm 42, the same being bent, when necessary, to present its free end in proper location extend ing across the outer face of said wormwheel 22.
The operation of our improved machine with more particular reference to the automatic stop mechanism is as follows: First the collar or ring 33 is set so that the lug or stop 34 is brought in a desired position, the weight 32 and cord 31 pulling upon said pulley-wheel 29 maintains the lug or stop 30 of said pulley wheel against said lug or stop 34. The said pulley-wheel 29 being secured upon said short shaft 23 which normally turns within said worm-wheel 22 moves also thus determining the position of the pin 36 with relation to its distance away from said arm 42. The distance of said pin 36 from said arm 42 determines how long the ma chine will operate before the automatic stop mechanism operates to throw out or disengage the driving clutch mechanism. This distance may be increased or decreased at will by moving the said collar or ring 33 to change the position of its lug or stop 34. After this adjustment has taken place the said bell-crank lever 13 is operated to move forward the slidable shaft 3 and throw in the driving clutch-mechanism. The said latch-member 15 engaging said notch 17 in said shaft 8 holds the same in position to maintain the clutch mechanism in its operative position, and at the same time, said latch-member 15 being connected with the rock-lever 39 is set. Vith the forward movement of said slidable shaft 8 is carried the pin 37 the end of which slides into engagement with the head of said wedge-pin 2S forcing the same inwardly, thereby causing the segments of said disk-portion 24, separated by the radiating splits or cuts 26, to spread and in the manner of a friction clutch engage said worm wheel 22, which being revolved by the worm 22 in turn transmits its revolution to said short shaft 23 and disk portion 24. The pin 36 connected with said disk portion. 24 is therefore caused to move slowly forward toward the arm 42 of said rock lever 39, and at the same time the pulley wheel. 29 revolves winding of the cord 31 and lifting the weight 32, while the lug or stop 30 connected therewith moves away from its stopped contact with said lug or stop 34 upon said collar or ring 33. As soon as the said pin 36 comes in contact wit the arm 42 of said rock-lever 39 it presses downwardly upon the same which causes a corresponding upward tilting of said arm 40 which engaging, as it does, the said latch member 15 rocks the same, and withdraws from holding contact with said notch 17 of said slidable shaft 8, the tongue 16. The spring 10 now acting upon the fixed collar 9 of said slidable shaft 8 causes the latter to move back into its normal initial position, thereby releasing the driving clutch mechanism from its thrown in or engaged position and causing the same to assume its thrown out or disengaged position, thereby bringing the machine to a stop. As said slidable shaft 8 resumes its normal initial position the pin 37 is carried away from its holding contact with said wedge pin 28 allowing the latter to spring outwardly and releasing the grip of said disk-portion 24 upon said worm-wheel 22 and permitting said short-shaft to turn freely within said, now stationary, worm wheel. The pull of the weight 32 upon said cord 31 and pulley 29 revolves the latter together with the shaft 23 until the lug or stop 30 again comes in contact with the lug or stop 34 of said collar or ring 33, in thus turning back the shaft 23 and the disk-portion 24 connected therewith the pin 36 is also carried back to its normally initial position, and the machine may be again started by operating said bell-crank lever 13 to repeat the function of throwing in the driving clutch-mechanism.
We are aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as'in the de ails of the construction of the same. as described in the accompanying specification, without departing from the scope of our present invention as defined in the claims which are appended to the said specification. Hence, we do not limit our invention to the exact arrangements and combii'iations of the devices and parts as set forth in the foregoing specification, nor do we confine ourselves to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

4. 5. In; a wire twisting and weaving machine, the combination with the feed rollers, of a driving clutch mechanism, a slidable shaft for operating the same, said slidable shaft being provided with a notched or cutaway portlon, a bell-crank lever for moving forward said slidable shaft, a coil spring for returning said slidable shaft to its normal initial position, a spring actuated latch mechanism adapted to engage said notched or cutaway portion of said slidable shaft to hold same in its forwardly moved position, a rock-lever, one arm of which engages said latch mechanism, means for automatically engaging the other arm of said rock-lever to trip said latch mechanism from its holding engagement with said slidable shaft, said means comprising a worm connected with said feed rollers, a worm-wheel operated by said worm, a short shaft loosely journaled in said wonn-wheel, a disk-portion connected with said short shaft and countersunk in. the outer face of said worm-wheel disk portion and a part of said shaft adjacent thereto being provided with a centrally disposed opening with splits or cuts radiating therefrom, a wedge pin slidably arranged in said centrally disposed opening, a contact pin carried by said slidable shaft adapted to force inwardly said wedge-pin when said slidable shaft is moved forward to secure a frictional engagement of said disk-portion with said worm-wheel to revolve said short shaft, a pin carried by said disk-portion adapted to be brought in engagement with said arm of said rock-lever when said short shaft is revolved, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a wire twisting and weaving machine, the combination with the feed rollers, of a driving clutch mechanism, a slidable shaft for operating the same, a latch-mechanism engaging saidslidable shaft, a rocklever engaging said latch-mechanism, a worm connected with said feed rollers, a worm-wheel operated by said worm, a short shaft loosely journaled in said worm-wheel, a 'friction clutch mechanism for connecting said short shaft with said worm-wheel, a disk portion connected with said short shaft, a pin carried by said disk portion adapted to engage said rock-lever when said short shaft is revolved, an adjustable collar, a lug carried by the same, a grooved pulley-wheel, a lug carried by said grooved pulley vheel adapted to normally engage said lug on said adjustable collar, a flexible cord suspended upon said pulley wheel, and a weight connected with said cord, substantially as and. for the purposes set forth.

In a wire-twisting and weaving machine, the combination with the feed rollers, of a driving clutch mechanism, a slidable shaft for operating the same, a latch-mechanism engaging said slidable shaft, a rocklever engaging said latch-mechanism, a worm connected with said feed rollers, a worm-wheel operated by said worm, ashort shaft loosely journaled in said worm-wheel, a disk portion connected with said short shaft and countersunk in the outer face of said worm-wheel, said disk portion and a part of said short shaft adjacent thereto being provided with a centrally disposed opening with splits or cuts radially therefrom, a wedge-pin slidably arranged in said centrally disposed opening, a contact pin carried by said slidable shaft and. adapted to engage said wedge-pin, a pin carried by said disk portion adapted to engage said rock-lever when said short shaft is revolved, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a wire twisting and weaving machine, the combination with the feed rollers, of a driving clutch mechanism, a slidable shaft for operating the same, a latch-mechanism engaging said slidable shaft, a rocklever engaging said latch-mechanism, a worm connected with said feed rollers, a worm-wheel operated by said worm, a short shaft loosely journaled in said worm-wheel, a disk portion connected with said short shaft and countersunk in the outer face of said worm-wheel, said disk portion and a part of said short shaft adjacent thereto being provided with a centrally disposed opening with splits or cuts radiating therefrom, a wedgepin slidably arranged in said centrally disposed opening, a contact pin carried by said slidable shaft and. adapted to engage said wedge-pin, a pin carried by said disk portion adapted to engage said rock-lever when said short shaft is revolved, an adjustable collar, a lug carried by the same, a grooved pulley wheel, a lug carried by said grooved pulley wheel adapted to normally engage said lug on said adjustable collar, a flexible cord suspended upon said pulley wheel, and a weight connected with said cord, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
20. In a wire-twisting and weaving ma chine, the combination with the feed rollers,
of a driving clutch mechanism, a slidable shaft for operating the same, a latch-mechanism engaging said slidable shaft, a rock lever engaging said latch-mechanism, an adjustable trip-mechanism for operating said rock-lever, gearing for operating said trip mechanism, a friction clutch device for connecting said trip mechanism with said gearing, and a contact pin carried by said slidable shaft for operating said friction clutch device, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
