To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILLIP KRUG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Russell, vin the county of Russell and State of Kansas, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in plows; and an object of my invention is to provide a plow which will be simple in construction, comparatively cheap in manufacture and most efficient in use.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of my invention and the best mode now known to me of applying that principle, Figure 1 is a plan view of my new plow; Fig. 2 is a side elevation looking in the direction of the arrow'A in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front elevation; Figs. 4f, 5 and 6 are details showing the mounting of the rear furrowwheel or caster-wheel; Fig. 7 is a detail showing the mounting of the front furrowwheel; Fig. 8 is a detail in section on the line B-B of Fig. 1; Fig. 9 is a detail of the guide connection between one of the plow beams and the frame; Fig. 10 is a detail of the mechanism for adjusting the landside wheel; Fig. 11 is a detail showing the plowbeams in elevation; Fig. 12 is a detail in section showing the axle of the landside wheel and the beam-carrying shaft; and Figs. 13 and ltare details showing in rear elevation the brackets which carry the plowshares.
The front beam a of the frame Z) is formed with two vert-ical slots c through one of which projects the plowbeam (l and through the other of which projects the plowbeam c. The latter are connected at their rear ends by the diagonal brace f and at their front ends by the transverse brace-bars g one of which lies in rear and the other in front of the front beam a (Fig. 1). The front ends of the plowbeams carry the draw-bar h formed with holes z' for the attachment and adjustment of the draft appliances (not shown). At one of its ends the draw-bar t is provided with a slotted lug j (Fig. 11) through which passes the bolt lo the outer end of which is engaged by the nut m formed with the integral arm n. Near its other end, the draw-bar 71, is formed with a rearwardly extending sleeve o which is fitted slidably upon the post p carried in a bracket g on the front end of the plowbeam e. From each of the side-bars of the frame extends upwardly a standard s. These standards s are connected by an integral yoke t, forming a sort of arch near the middle of which is fastened the lower end of the seat-spring a to the upper end of which is attached the seat o. Upon each of the plowbeams (l, c is fastened a hanger 'w in which is carried the beam-carrying shaft m, the outer end y of which is bent first downwardly and then parallel to the main or body-portion of the'shaft (Fig. 12). Upon this outer end of the shaft :v is fastened a beam-controlling arm .a to the upper end of which is pivotally fastened a thumb-latch 2 connected by the link-rod 3 with the upper end of the springcontrolled detent 4 the lower end of which is adapted to engage between the teeth of the toothed segment 5. The latter is fastened to one of the side-bars of the frame 6, as is shown in Fig. 1. Between the shaft w near its inner end and the seat-spring u is interposed a coil-spring 6 which is placed under vtension when the plowshares 7, 8 are forced into the ground and which assists in raising the plowshares from the ground when the detent 4 is raised out of engagement with the teeth of the toothed segment 5 and the arm e is allowed to fall to the rear, whereby the shaft a5 is turned (Fig. 11) in its bearing-box w fastened to one of the side-bars of the frame Upon the inner end of the beam-carrying shaft m is mounted one end of a rocker-arm 9 the other end of which is mounted on a rock-shaft 10 fitted in a socket-member or sleeve 11 journaled in the hanger 12 which is fastened to one of the side-bars of the frame Z). The inner end of the sleeve 11 is formed with the integral crank-arm 13 and to its outer end is fastened the upper end of the axle 14C of the landside wheel 15. To the lower end of the crank-arm 13 is fastened one end of a link 16 the other end of which is fastened to the lower end of the lever 17. Pivotally mounted upon the latter is a thumb-latch 18 which is connected by the latch-rod 19 with a spring-controlled detent 20, the lower free end of which is adapted to engage between the teeth of the toothed segment 21.
To one of the side-bars of the frame b, near the rear thereof is fastened a plate 22, (Fig. 9) formed with guide-ribs 23 between which slides a post 24 which carries a screw-headed lug-bolt 25 and which is held by the bolt 32 and its nut (not shown). The shank of the bolt 25 passes through a slot 26 in the guide-arm 27 formed integral with the base-plate 28. The latter has curved slots 29 through each of which passes' a headed bolt 30. The curved slots 29 permit the adjustment of the guide-plate 28; and by looseninfr the nut (not shown) on the outer end of the bolt 32 the slidable guidepost 24 may be varied in position or adjusted.
The rear of the frame is formed with a slot 33 through which projects the inner end of a threaded stud 34 upon which is mounted the nut 35. The threaded stud 34 extends inwardly from the bracket 36 the outer end of which is formed with a disk 37 having curved slots 38 through each of which projects the shank of a bolt 39. The latter holds together the disk 37 and a similar disk 40 which is formed integral with the sleevebearing 41 in which is mounted the post 42 the lower end 43 of which is bent to form an axle for the rear furrow or caster-wheel 44. Below the sleeve-bearing 41 there is fastened upon the post 42 a collar 45; and above the sleeve-bearing 41 there is fastened a crank-arm 46 one end of which is connected by the link-rod 47 with the crank-arm 48 fastened upon the post 49 the lower end 50 of which is bent to form an axle for the front furrow-wheel 51. The post 49 is journaled in the sleeve-bearing 52 carried by a box 53 which is mounted adjustably upon one end of the front-beam a. Below the sleeve-bearing 52 there is mounted upon the post 49 a collar 54; and above the sleevebearing 52 there is mounted a crank-arm 55 in one end of which is carried the scraper 56. To the top of the post 49 is fastened one end of the steering-bar or guide-arm 57 which is within reach of the driver mounted upon the seat lv. The feet of the driver are supported by the foot-rests 58 one of which is mounted upon each of the side-bars of the frame b.
The plowshares 7, 8 are each provided with a moldboard 60. The front plowshare 7 and its moldboard are bolted to the wing 61 of a two-winged bracket, the other wing 62 of which is bolted to the curved rear end of the plowbeam d. The wings 61, 62 of the bracket meet at an acute angle in which lits the curved rear end of the plowbeam d. The plowshare 8 and its moldboard 60 are bolted to the wing 63 of a two-winged bracket, the other wing 64 of which is bolted to the curved rear end of the plowbeam e. The plowshare 7 which is fastened to the bracketwing 61, engages in a notch 65 formed in the lower end of the wing 62; and the plowshare 8 which is attached to the bracketwing 63, is fitted in a notch 66 in the bracketwing 64. Between the rear ends of the bracket- wings 63, 64 is mounted a brace 67.
I claim:
l. The combination, in a plow, of a frame having a pair of side-members; a bent shaft one end of which is mounted free to turn in one of said side-members; a plow-beam carried by said shaft a bent axle mounted in the other of said side-members; a wheel mounted on said axle; a rock-shaft carried by the last-named side-member; a rockerarm which is mounted on said rock-shaft and which supports the other end of said bent shaft; and arms for turning the latter and said axle.
2. In a plow, the combination of a frame having a pair of side-members; a bent shaft one end of which is mounted free to turn in one of said side-members; a plow-beam carried by said shaft; a bent axle mounted in the other of said side-members; a wheel mounted on said axle; a rock-shaft one end of which is connected with said axle free to turn relatively thereto; a rocker-arm which is mounted on said rock-shaft and which supports the otherend of said bent shaft; anld arms for turning the latter and said ax e.
3. In a plow, the combination of a frame having a pair of side-members; a bent shaft one end of which is mounted free to turn in one of said side-members; a plow-beam carried by said shaft; a bent axle mounted in the othei` of said side-members and formed with a socket member; a wheel mounted on said axle; a rock-shaft which is mounted free to turn in said socket-member; a rockerarm which is mounted on said rock-shaft and which supports the other end of said bent shaft; and arms for turning the latter and said axle.
