HYDRAULIC CAP MECHANISM FOR SUGAR-CANE MILLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 1910.
Application filed April 7, 1909. Serial No. 488,468.
sugar-cane mills or the like in which the- I pressure exerted upon the rolls is automatically limited by. providing a yielding hydraulic-plunger backing for the rolls.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction whereby the handling of cumbersome parts for repairs and renewals as ordinarily required, will be practically avoided and the proper maintenance of the machine greatly facilitated.
Figure 1 is a partial end elevation of a sugar mill embodying my improvements, the top-cap being shown in section and the plunger plug removed. Fig.2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the plunger-plug.
In the drawing that portion only of the housing 2 is shown, in which the shaft 3 of the top roll et of a-sugar-cane mill is mounted; the positions of the usual coacting rolls being merely indicated by the dotted lines 5 and 6. The top bearing 7 of the shaft 3 is vertically movable in the housing andis backedby a hydraulic plunger 8 so as to .permit the roll torise as usual for the passage ot any accidentally introduced mate-- rial that would otherwise subject the machine to undue strains.
The plunger 8, which is provided at its upperfend with a cupped leather packing ring 9, is fitted to a suitably lined hydraulic cylinder 10. -This cylinder, as shown, is formed in a top cap 11 which is secured by bolts, as indicated, to the housing 2; and its bore extends entirely through the cap so that the plunger may be introduced or withdrawn at either end while the cap remains rigidly secured to the housing.
In connection with the plunger 8 and open-end cylinder 10, I provide a plungerplug in the upper end of said cylinder.
The lower end of this plug is provided with a cupped leather packing 1G, and is spaced apart from the packed upper end of the plunger 8 so as to provide an intermediate chamber for the compressing 1nedium,which latter is introduced as indicated through an opening 17 and a connected conduit 18. This plug is adapted to be readily inserted into and removed from the open upper end of the cylinder, and provision is made for quickly locking it in inserted position by means, as shown, of locking ears 19, 19
formed on its projecting upper end and arranged to be engaged or disengaged by rigid locking lugs 20, 20 on the top of the cap by giving a quarter-turn movement to the inserted plug.
hen the mill is in operation the hydraulic pressure bears equally upon the plug '15 and plunger 8, leaving the latter free to yield when required to relieve the rolls from excessive strains, while the plug is rigidly retained by the locking lugs 20. If access to the plunger is required however, as to renew the packing. this is readily accomplished by disengaging and withdrawing the plug without removing any cumbersome part of the machine.
lVhat I claim is The combination with the housing, the movable roll bearing therein, and the projecting housing bolts, of the removably secured housing cap engaged by said projecting bolts and formed with an intermediate hydraulic cylinder having'a bore of uniform diameter throughout open at both ends and overhanging plug-locking lugs, a pressure controlled plunger in the lower portion-of said cylinder forming a movable backing for said roll bearing, and an independently removable plunger-plug insertible into said cylinder through the open upper end thereof and provided with lug-engaging cars adapted to lock said plug in fixed position in the cap, substantially and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
