Jams RBcrr UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES R. BERRY, OF JONESBORO, TENNESSEE.
SAW-GUIDE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs It. BERIRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jonesboro, in the county of IVashington, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw- Guides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
This invention relates to saw guides.
One object of the invention is to provide a saw guide embodying such characteristics that it may be easily and quickly thrown into and out of operative relation with the saw to perform the usual functions of devices of this character through the instrumentality of a single operating lever.
WVith the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the ac companying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, an end view; and, Fig. 4, an enlarged detail perspective view of the guide proper. Fig. 5 is a detailed view of a modified type of guide arm fingers.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a bed frame including side sills 2 and 3 and an intermediate longitudinal sill 4, the frame being supported preferably by legs 5.
Journaled transversely of the bed frame in suitable bearings 6, secured to the side sills and the intermediate sill is a mandrel 7, the latter being connected with a suitable source of power through the instrumentality of a belt traveling on a pulley 9 mounted on the mandrel.
Mounted upon the sill 3 is a standard 10 provided at its upper and lower ends with perforated ears l1 and 12 adapted to re ceive a bar 13 which is rotatably mounted in and disposed between said ears. Secured to Y the bar 13 for rotation therewith and dis- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1910.
Application filed May 29, 1908. Serial No. 435,788.
posed substantially at right angles thereto is a guide arm 14. Carried at one end of said arm 14 and projecting laterally therefrom is a guide A; said guide being formed from a single piece of metal bent upon itself to form two oppositely curved portions 16, each having their free ends bent inwardly and disposed in parallel spaced relation as at 17. Said inwardly projecting portions 17 are adapted to be disposed on opposite sides of the saw blade and brought into engagement with the latter by oscillating the bar 13 in a manner to be presently described.
The oscillation of the rod 13 and the guide arm 14 is had by pivotally connecting the inner end of said guide arm with a link 18 which latter is pivotally connected with one end of a lever 19 fulcrumed intermediate its ends by a suitable pivot- 20 to the aforementioned intermediate longitudinal sill 4 and which lever is adapted to be moved upon its fulcrum through the mediumof an operating lever which has connection with lever 19 by a link connection 21.
What is claimed is:
In a saw guide, a bed frame, a saw carried by the frame, a standard mounted upon the frame having its terminals bent to form parallel spaced ears; a rod rotatably mounted between said ears, a guide arm mounted upon said rod for angular movement therewith, said guide arm comprising a plate, saw engaging fingers secured to one end of said plate formed from a single piece of metal bent to form two oppositely curved portions having their terminals bent inwardly in parallel spaced relation to receive the edge of the saw between them, and means for oscillating said guide arm so that the terminals of said engaging fingers may be forced into contact respectively with adjacent sides of the saw.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES R. BERRY.
