IMPROVEMENT m VELOCIPEDES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SYLVESTER M. BAILEY, of Cottage Grove, in the county of Washington, and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and improved Velocipedc; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying'drawing, forming part of this specification, in which I I Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved velocipede.

My invention relates to velocipedes, and consists in a sail-attachment and sun-protector, which will be more fully described hereafter.
Otherwise, the parts are of suitable construction, form, and arrangement.
The device can be converted iutopa water-veloct pede, by attaching floats E E to the wheels.
lThese floats are made of segmental or of curved form, so that they ma in sections, be fitted around the tires of the wheels.
They are made hollow, and of sheet-metal, or other suitable material, and are, in suitable manner, fitted to the sides or edges of the wheels. V Paddles or projecting cross-pieces b b are formed on these floats, so that they will, when revolved, propel the device through the water, and also sustain the same therein. I
Thedevice can also be converted into an ice-velocipede, by seeming runners F to the hind wheel D, in
which case the said wheel is locked, so that it cannot turn.
.At the same time, there are spurs, or a rubber band, secured to the edge of the front driving-wheel, .to cause the same to propel on the ice.
A sail, G, made of sheet-metal, or other suitable material, which is secured to arms 0 c, is-pivoted to the frame of the machine, and canbe turned and locked in any suitable position to catch the wind.
It can also be swung into a horizontal position, as
in fig. '1, to protect the rider from the rays of the sun I and from rain.
The hind wheel D consists of two separate wheels,
which can slide on their axle H, and which can, by means of lovers I I, be adjusted any suitable distance apart, or as close together as necessary.
The steering-handle J, which is hung in the upper part of the steering-post, is a crank-axle, which is, by means of pitmen d 41, connected with the foot-cranks a a, so that it can be used to propel the vehicle by means of the hands, while the feet also are-used.
The connecting-rods d can-be easily removed, when the feet alone are to be used for propulsion.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is
1. The pivoted sail and sun-protector G, arranged on a velocipede, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The arrangement of the crank-axleJ, and steering-post, in .the manner described, to admit of their use for steering or propelling-purposes.
