Description
MAJOR E. DAVIS, OF ROME, GEORGIA.
IMPRGVEMENT IN COMBINED REVOLVING HOE AND COTTON CULTIVATOR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 97 ,277, dated November 30, 1869.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MAJOR E. DAvIs, of Rome, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Machine for the Cultivation of Cotton; and I do hereby declare that the following is a specification of the same.
The nature of my invention consists of a double plow and revolving hoes, used principally for chopping, thinning, and plowing cotton, by which combination one hand and one horse can do the work of two horses and ve hands with the ordinary plow and hoe.
To an intelligent understanding of my invention, I append the following description of its construction: The beam A is three (3) feet long and two (2) inches wide and two (2) inches broad. Side pieces, B, three and a half (3l) feet long, and other dimensions same as the beam. rlwo side wheels (marked C) are twenty (20) inches in diameter, iixed to an iron axle one inch square. Wheel E, worked by the saine axle, is a cast-iron cog-wheel, six (6) inches in diameter, cogs half-inch thick, which work into another cast-iron cog-wheel, F, four and a half inches in diameter 5 cogs of same dimensions as in wheel E. Wheel F connects, by an iron axle one inch square and length according to size of plow, an iron frame containing four steel hoes, G, three of which are shown in the drawings. Rear wheels, II, are iive inches in diameter, of cast-iron, and worked in an iron frame or foot eight inches long, and govern the depth of the revolving hoes. rlhe feet for plows are twelve inches long, and are attached to the side pieces in such position as to bring the shares a little forward of the wheels O. The shares are shown at I, and are attached to the feet or standards by screw-bolts. Each share is provided with a wing, I', which projects in front of the wheel, for the purpose of removing obstructions and mellowing the soil. The hoes may be placed slightly oblique to the plane of rotation, or parallel, as may be desired.
I claim- The herein described construction of the gear-wheel E F, revolving hoes G, supportingwheels H, and shares I I', when arranged and combined with the main wheels C, frame B, and shaft D, as specified.
MAJOR E. DAVIS.
