Be it known that 1, None P. B. ESKILDSEN,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Hampton, in the county of Hamilton and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved lVagon-Box Protector, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment for the back end of lumber wagons, grain and other carts to protect the rear end, especially from the scoop shovel in unloading grain or other material from the wagon or cart.

In the drawing, I have shown an ordinary form of wagon box as is necessary to illustrate the practical application of my invention, it being understood my invention, with slight modifications of form on the showing made in the drawing, is applicable for substantially all types of wagons or carts from which the grain or other material is discharged by scooping the same over the tail end of the wagon bed.

My protector comprises a sheet metal body which, in the blank form, has the. shape shown in Fig. 4, by reference to which it will be seen the same includes a transverse member that is cut at the opposite ends to form short lateral extensions or cars 1, the purpose of which will presently appear. The part 2 is of enough width to provide for three bending lines designated m, 1 and .2 so as to provide, when the part 2 is bent on the so much of lines indicated, a protecting edge of a substantially U-shape in cross section, the lower nien'iber of which merges with a pendent flange I) and the upper merges with a verti- :al flange or shoulder 0 that forms the abutment for the lower edge of the end gate and from which the inwardly projecting and inclined member (Z extends, it being understood the member (Z forms the wear plate to be engaged by the scoop as it shovels out the contents of the box over the tail end thereof. 7

To sustain the protector edge proper and the pendent flange I) in a rigid relation, the ears 1 are bent down over the inner face of the outer opposite ends of the flanges b to which they are secured by the rivets c and for firmly securing the complete protector onto the wagon box the flange b has a number of apertures f for the passage of the bolts g, that extend through the bolster or cross cleat ii on the under side of the tai end of the wagon box, see Fig.

From the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawings the manner in which my protecting device is formed, its use in wagon boxes and the advantages thereof will be readily apparent.

By reason of the construction shown and described. it can be easily made up into the desired sizes to fit different sizes of wagon beds and as the flange a is formed with a number of apertures, the protector can be quickly bolted to the wagon box.

Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A wagon box end protector, con'iprising a substantially U-shaped sheet metal body having a wear plate for projecting on the tail end of the wagon bed, a reinforced portion for fitting over the said end and a tastening member adapted for being secured 'to the wagon box.

2. A. wagon box protector formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent to form a protecting portion of substantially U-shape in cross section and bentto form a pendent flange tor fastening to the wagon box and bent to form an inwardly extending wear plate for fitting over the 'tail end of the wagon bed.

3. The combination with the tail end of a wagon bed and a cross cleat on the under side thereof; of a metallic protector bent to fit over the tail end of the wagon bed, provided with a pendent flange for engaging 10 section for fitting over the tail end. of the bed, a flange that projects pendently from the said portion ears bent down from the upper part of the said portion over and secured to the flange, an abutmentbent up from the inner edge of the top of the said portion and a Wear plate that projects inwardly from the abutment.
