Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 20, 1910. Application filed November 18, 1909, Serial No. 528,737. 7
eraser and pencil sharpener, the object in view being to provide a simple, cheap and effective device of this character comprising a body of erasing material, a sharpening blade carried thereby, and a guard for covering the blade when 'not in use to prevent The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device with the guard closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with theguard open. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a section taken at right angles to Fig. 3. Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body of the device, which preferably comprises a circular disk of erasive material, such as rubber or rubber combined with an abrading surface, as desired. Ex-
tending through and between the sides of said disk is adiagonally .inclined slot 2 which is ali-ned with slots 3 and 4 in metallic reinforcing plates- 5" and 8 bearing against the'respective sides of the disk, which plates are preferably of circular form and less diameter than thedisk, as shown. These plates are fastened at diametrically opposite sides tethediskby rivets? and 8 which pass transversely through/said disk. The headed end of the rivet 7 which passes through the plate 5 is countersunk in a deression or recess 9 formed in the plate ad acent one end of the slot 3, as shown.
A blade 10 is arranged in the slot 5 and may be fixed'to the disk and plates or otherwise supported in position. This blade has a beveled cutting e ge 11 extending 'thr'ou h the slot 3 in the plate 5 and proje'ctin su ciently to form a planing cutter, so t at by alternately reciprocating and rota ing the end of a pencil across the plate/he wood casing of the pencil may be cut away and bythe operator drawing the pencil toward him, or by shoving it away from him, as preferred.
The slot is of greater width than the thickness of the blade to provide a dis.- charge-passage for the chips.
The disk may be employed in an obvious manner so that its periphery may be used as a pencil or an ink eraser according to the material of which the disk is made. In such use, the edge of the blade should be covered in order to prevent injury to the thumb or -fingers of the operator.
or this purpose a circular guard plate or cover12 is employed which is coextensive'in diameter with the plate '5 so that it may completely overlie the slot 3 and edge 11, This guard late has at one side a boss 13 which pivota 1y engages the projecting end of the rivet 8, and at its diametrically opposite side is indented to form a spring stud 14: to engage'the keeper 9, whereby the plate may be secured in guarding position against casual displacement. The, guard is preferably corrugated or serrated in order that it may be readily swung on its pivot to open and closed positions.
When sufficient force is applied to open the guard, the stud 14 will ride out of the keeper, as will be readily understood. An eye 15 is provided -upon the late 6 for the attachment of a cord in or er to enable the device to be secured against lossor displacement.
In providing a combination article of this character great convenience is afforded to clerks, stenographers and others, and the construction is such as to enable the device to be economically made.
1. A device of the character described comprising a body of erasing material having a slot'therein reinforcing plates disposed on opposite sides of the body and having registering slots, a blade disposed in the slot in the.botly and having a cutting edge projecting through the slot in one of said plates, the latterplateheing provided with v a locking depression or recess, rlvets extending through the body and plates and unitingl the same, and a guard pivotally mounte upon one of said rivets, said guard havin lockingindentation to engage said locking recess. 1
2. A device of the character described comprising a body of erasing material havv '5 jecting through the slot in one of said plates, Witnesses:
ing a slot therein, reinforcing plates secured to opposite sides of the body and having registering slots, abla'de disposedin the slot in the body and having a cutting edge proin presence of two witnesses.
