ings, of which the' following is a full, clear,
and exactdescription.
In the driving of wells it `sometimes happens that a sect1on or string of-wellcasing or a liner, parts or the liner collapsesI This lseparat/ed parts.
is generally repaired by leaving the parted casing or liner in the 'well and lowering another string of casingor liner within the Considerable diiiculty is generally experienced in passingthe smaller l is knocked. from the Well casin crushed into fragments in the we l and after-l i erence indicate casing or'liner within the lower section or part of the parted Acasing or liner. I have successfully overcome this ditliculty in practice by my shoe-guide, which-'is constructed with a tapering guiding head .to easily-.pass within thecasing, and has a neck adapted to fit tightly vwithin the shoe, the entire guide being in the nature-of a' shell of cast iron or other material more readily fragile than theucasing or theshoe, so that when the shell it is easily ward removed. t
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, in 4which .similar characters of refcorresponding parts in both the views. y v
Figure 1 is aI central vertical section through 'a Well, showing the lower -part or sect-ion of a parted casing and a section or string of sma 4 shoe-guide, the latter being in' a position pre aratory to ventering the larger casing; an Fig, 2 is a perspectlve view of the shoeguide remo'ved rom the shoe.
The shoe-guide as referably constructed comprises a tapering ead 10 and a neck 11,y
the neck extendinvr from the enlarged -end of the head and otpa size to be easily driven within a casing shoe 12, the latter being'a common device in vwell construction, and, as shown, is constructed with an internallythreaded portion 12g adapted to fit over and ler casing having my improved l Witnesses:
screw on the lower end of aline or section of well casing 13, and is provided with a lower. ortion 14 of an internal diameter approxlmately equal to that of the well casin to which it is applied. Into this interna reduced portion of the shoe, the neck of my improved shoe-guide is desi ed to` tifghtly lit. ,The shoeu ide is in t e form;y o a shell open throug out. its length so ast not to choke Ithe-well passage, and is made ofcast iron or othersuitable material more readil l fragile than the casing or shoe so that 1t is easily crushed into fragments. The maximum diameter ofthe shoe-guide, which is preferably at the shoulder between the head 10 .and neck 11, is equal to or slightly 'greater`than the diameter of the shoe, so that the shoe as well as the strin of well casin or liner will freely enter and pass within t e lower art or section 15 of the parted casing or mer after the Ashoeguivde is entered. After the vsmaller section of the well casing or liner is entered within the .largercasing or liner, the shoe-guideis. knocked out by a suitable tool entered from the top of the well, afterwhiclh the guide is easily crushed into fragments 'and removed...,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent:
1. A guiding device for directingone section of well casing within another, constructed of a ,fragile material, whereby itis adapted to be crushed into fragments within t e Well and removed therefrom through the casing. L v L 2. The combination of a section of well casing, a shoe carried by the lowerend of the said section of wellcasing, and a shell to direct the section of well casing into a larger section of well casing, removably applied Vto the shoe and of a .material more readily fragile than the shoe or well casing.
In Itestimony whereof I have signed my.
namel to this specification in the presence of two lsubscribing witnesses. A ALBERTi. GRA-HAM.
