W. L. CLARK. CASE FOR SHAVIN'G APPLIANCES.

WALTER LEIGHTON CLARK, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CASE FOR SI-IAVING APPLIANCES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 20, 1910.
Application filed February 18, 1907. Serial No. 358,099.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VAT/PER LEIGI-I'ION CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for Shaving Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is intended to provide a simple, compact and durable case or box which will contain a razor of the ordinary or open-blade type, together with a stick of shaving soap or a shaving brush, or both, and resides in certain features of construction hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through one form of case made in accordance with my invention; Fig.2 is a perspective view showing the parts by which the interior of the case shown in Fig. 1 is divided into compartments; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same case, with its cover removed; and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but illustrating a modified construction.
As represented in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, my case comprises a cylindrical tube orbody portion 2 which is preferably made of thin sheet metal and has a closed bottom 3, being provided at its top with a cover 4 telescopically fitted thereto. The interior of the body portion 2 is divided into longitudinally-extending compartments by means of the parts illustrated in perspective in Fig. 2 and consisting of a tube 5, open atboth ends, and a supplementary partition piece such as a strip 6 which has the same length as the tube 5, or substantially so, and is preferably secured at its longitudinal center to one side of said tube 5, the longitudinal edges 7 of the strip 6 being bent away from the tube as shown. The parts 5 and 6 are so proportioned with respect to the tube 2 that when inserted into the latter the edges 7 0f the strip 6 and the opposite side of the tube 5 will simultaneously engage the interior walls of the tube 2, as shown in Fig. 3, thus providing Within said tube two main compartments 8 and 9, of which the former is of a suitable shape to receive an ordinary razor while the latter is adapted to receive a shaving brush or a shaving stick, or both, the tube 5 and strip 6 being preferably made of sheet metal and given substantially the same length as the tube 2. These parts 5 and 6 may be permanently secured within the tube 2 if desired, but I prefer to cause them to be held therein by friction only, so that they may be readily removed, to which end the strip 6 is so formed as to cause its edges 7 to exert against the interior of the tube 2 a spring pressure sufiicient for the intended purpose.
In order to prevent the contents of the case from rattling within it, I prefer to provide one or more strip springs 10 each secured within one of the compartments 8 and 9, in position to bear against whatever may be contained therein.
In Fig. 1 three springs are shown, one for each of the articles intended to be carried in the case, each spring being riveted at one end to the combined parts 5 and 6 at their adjacent or connected sides. These springs are intended to exert a pressure on the contents of the case which will be sufficient to prevent such contents from moving about within said case, but not sufiicient to prevent them from falling out of the case by gravity if the case is inverted, and they may be omitted entirely if desired.
In Fig. 4: I have shown a modification according to which the strip 6 is replaced by another form of supplementary partition piece consisting of a flattened tube 11 of the same length as the tube 5 and adapted to form of itself a compartment similar to ,that formed by the strip 6 and the tube 2 conjointly. In this case the tubes 5 and 11 may be caused to exert a spring pressure against the interior of the tube 2 sufficient to hold them in place, and may or may not be secured to each other. This construction results in a rather more rigid case than the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, since the three tubes will re-inforce one another in an obvious manner, but either arrangement provides a convenient and durable article which may be produced at small expense and may be readily finished or ornamented externally in any desired manner.
I claim as my invention:
1. A case for shaving appliances comprising a tubular body portion having an inner tube of less diameter and a supplementary partition piece contained therein and bearing laterally against each other and against opposite sides of the body portion, said contained parts being arranged to form respectively the inner walls of longitudinally-extending compartments which are open at one end of the case.
2. A case for shaving appliances comprising a tubular body portion and longitudinally-extending partition Walls removably located therein, side by side, and arranged to exerta lateral spring pressure on opposite sides of the interior of said body portion, said partition Walls providing longitudinal compartments Within the body portion, substantially as described.
3. A case for shaving appliances compris ing a tubular body portion and an arrangement of partition Walls extending longitudinally therein and consisting of a tube of less diameter than the body portion and bearing against one side of the same, and a supplementary partition piece bearing against the opposite side of said body portion and also against said inner tube, said partition Walls being arranged to exert a lateral pressure on the interior of the body portion whereby they are removably held therein.
4. Acase for shaving appliances comprising a tubular body portion and longitudinally-extending partition Walls contained therein and consisting of an inner tube and a supplementary partition piece secured to one side thereof and diverging laterally therefrom, said partition Walls being arranged to bear against opposite sides of the interior of said body portion and providing longitudinal compartments Within the same Which are open at one end thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 13th day of February, 1907.
