L) W r 35 WILLIAM T. WIGHTMAN, OF HALF MOON BAY, CALIFORNIA.
BINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1910.
Application filed January 21, 1910. Serial No. 539,386.
To all wlwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. lvlonr MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Half Moon Ba in the county of San Mateo and State 0 California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hinges adapted to support a door in such annanner that the door may be readily adjusted vertically.
An important object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character which will be simple in construction, neat in appearance and chea to manufacture.
My invention consists generally in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like.
numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side view of a door or ui ped with my hinges. Fig. 2 is a view of the ower hin c. Fig. 3 is a view of the upper hin'ge. ig. 4 is a plan view of a plate to be used in connection with the upper hinge.
In the drawings, wherein the )referred embodilncnt of my invention is illustrated, 2 and 3 dcsignalc the leaves of the lower hingc. 'lhclcaf 2 is designed to be secured upon the jumb of thc door-way by means of screws or the like which pass through the openings 4 formed upon said lcaffl. The leaf 2 is providcd upon its engaging edge and adjacent the uppcr cud thereof with a knuckle 5 which in turn is provided with an axial opening. The leaf 2 is provided near its center and upon its engaging edge with a second knuckle (l which is also provided with an axial o )tltlll". The leaf 3 is adapt.- cd to be sccurot l upon the door by means of screws or the likowhich pass through the openings 7 formed upon said leaf 3. The leaf 3 is provided upon its engaging edge and adjacent its lower end with "a knuckle H which is provided with a. screw threaded axial opening. The leaf 3 is further provided ncar its ccntcr and in ion its cngaging edge with a knuckle ll whic l is disposcd hetwccn the knuckles 5 and It focused upon the plate 2. The knuckle 9 is provided with an axial opening. pint to it) )rovnlcd at its upper cud with a hcad ll am a large shouldcr it. passes through the knucklcs 5. t) and ti and pivot ally connects the leaves 3 and 3 together. The lower end of the pintle 10 is screw threaded as at 13 and is disposed within the screw threaded opening of the knuckle 8. Owing to the fact that there is considerable space between the knuckles formed upon the leaf 2 and the knuckles formed upon the leaf 3, it is obvious that the leaf 3 may be adjusted vertically by rotat ing the pintle 10 clock-wise. The pintle 10 is loosely mounted in the knuckles throu h which the same pass and the head 11 of said pintle is provided with an aperture 14 within which may be inserted one end of a snitable tool for rotating said pintle 10.
In Fig. 3 I have illustrated a form of hinge which is adapted to cooperate with the hinge shown in Fig. .2 and which is arranged above the hinge shown in Fig. 2. The hinge shown in Fig. 3 comprises a leaf 15 which is :idaptcd to be secured to the door, b means of screws or the like passing throng the openings It'. The leaf 15 is provided at its upper end and, upon its engagin edge with a knuckle 17. The leaf 15 1S urthcr n-ovidcd upon its engaging edge and near its center with a second knuckle 18. A leaf It provided with s )accd knuckles and 21 winch are arranged upon the cngagin surface of said leaf near its center and ower edge respectively, is adapted to cooperate with the leaf l5 and is nvotnll connected to the same by means o u pinti e 21 which passes through the. knuckles l7 and 18, 20
and 21. The leaf [9 is adapted to be securedv to the door jnlnb and provided with longitudinally arranged slots .32 for the reception of screws or the like. it is to be understood that the screws arranged within the slots 2 will be normally disposed at their centers and therefore allow of the vertical move: ment of the leaf ll) with relation to the domjmnh. I may also employ a rectangular plate ".23 provided with the openings 21 which are adapted to re istcr .with the slots 22. 'lhc st'l'cn's for hohfing the leaf 1!) pass through the opcningsill upon the plate 23 \vln'u said platc 23 is placed upon the leaf It The object of the plate 23 is to hide the I slo s l'orntcd upon the leaf l9 and thus improvc the appearance of the hinge, and to pro-vent the heads of the screws from working through the slots 32.
In use, the hing shown in Fi 2 connccts the lower portions of the 500! and jamh. and the hinge shown in Fi 3 connccts the upper portions of the 100! and jamb. \Vhen it is desired to vertically adjust the door the pintle 10 is rotated clockwise which will elevate the door. It will be seen that the leaf 19 is capable of being moved vertically upon the jnmb and therefore does not interfere with the vertical movement of the door.
Having fully described my invention, 1 claim A hinge, of the character described, com prising a stationary leaf, having knuckles formed thereon, an adjustable leaf having knuckles formed thereon, a pintle assing through said knuckles and pivotaly connet-ling said leaves, said pintle heinfg rotatalxi moulded In said knuckles and HlVlIl" a .Y r-
screw-threaded end dis osed within one knuckle formed upon said adjustable leaf.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM 'l. \VTG'HTMAN. Wit nesses U. W. BURDEN, J. J. llmoms.
