To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES A. Nonnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoosick Falls, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Making Machinery, of which the followin is a specification.

y invention relates to paper making machinery, and the object of my invention is to provide an improvement on a Jordan engine plug, whereby the bars-on a plug shall be held positively in position, and when necessar to remove them it may be done expeditiously and when new bars are placed in position they will be held there as firmly as theretofore, together with such other elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly described and claimed. I accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

In Jordan engine plugs the great weakness and objectionable and troublesome feature is the means for securing the bars at the small end of the plug. The wrought iron hoop ordinarily used is shrunk on hot; this has to be removed )eriodically to replace the worn bars and woods with new ones, and being done in the paper mill, this ring is liable not to be shrunk on again perfectly tight, either through carelessness or ignorance, and a large repair bill ensues. This wrought iron hoop also is liable to stretch under the great stress exerted at this point, with the same result described above. To take the place of this wrought iron hoop I construct a cast steel ring, A, with the inner edge, B, of the flange, C, which fits on the end of the plug, D, of an outwardly flaring form, shown in Fig. 2, so that the diameter of the ring from the outer end of the inner edge of the flange, 0, is greater than the diameter of the ring from the point where the flange joins the main body of the ring, and I so ,construct the Specification of Letters Patent.

ends of the bars, E, and the lug, D, that there shall be provided a shou lder, F, having its contour formed to correspond with the inner edge, 13, of the flange, G, in such a manner that as the ring, A, is forced on to the end of the plug, the bars, IE, will be engaged by the inner ed re, B, of the flange, (J, and will act as a we( go thereupon.

I may fasten the ring in place by means of non-corrosive screws, G, which pass through, preferably, elon ated slots, g. I, preferably, place a flan eftl, on the ring, A, which will extend at east flush with the heads of the screws G, to prevent the catching and winding oi any substance upon the heads of the screws.

The object of making the opening, 1, for the screws, Gr elongated is in order to, if desired, in replacing the ring to move it so that it shall not engage with the bars, I), in the same place as such engagement was made before the removal of the ring, thus preventing undue wearing of the ring in certain places.

\Vhen my ring has been drawn onto the plug it cannot become loose unintentionally, and after removal, no skill or special care is required to replace it in as secure a manner as when it was first put 011.

WVh-at I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

The combination of a disk provided with a series of elongated slots therethrough; a flange on said disk .flarin outwardly therefrom; a Jordan engine p lug provided with a series of bars; shoulders on said bars at the small end of said plug, so arranged and connected up that said flange ma bedriven onto the said shoulders. on sai bars and hold them tightly in position on the plug; a series of non-corrosive screws extending through said elongated slots in the disk for the purpose of holding the disk in position on the end of the plug.
