To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUGUST LUSSKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for WVheelbarrows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments to wheelbarrows and affording means whereby the wheel may conveniently pass from one level to a higher or over an obstruction and comprises a simple and efficient device adapted to be permanently attached to the wheelbarrow.

The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a. perspective view showing the device adjusted for use. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the movable member upon which the wheel travels held back in a position out of use. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. e is a detail perspective showing the rod and loops adapted to be supported by the axle of the wheel.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the frame of a wheelbarrow of the usual construction having an axle B upon which the wheel C is mounted, the ends of said axle being journaled in suitable bearings in the rails of the wheelbarrow.

D designates the cross-piece of the wheelbarrow which is notched at D, and E designates a hook which is mounted in the cross piece adjacent to the marginal edge of said recess.

F, F designate wires which are bent to form elongated loops supported upon the axle, one upon either side of the wheel, and G designates a bolt which is supported in the contracted ends of said loops, as shown.

H designates a board which may be of any suitable size and is provided with a recess I formed in one end and an elongated slot K formed transversely through the board, said slot being adapted to receive said bolt which has a play therein. A screw eye N is fastened tothe rear portion of said board and is adapted to engage said hook to hold the board in the recess D when said board is not in use, the edges of the recess preventing a lateral swinging movement of the board when thus held out of use. When the board is adjusted in the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be noted that the wheel will turn in the recess I with out interference to the board. 7

The operation of my device will be readily understood and is as follows :The board being normally held to the wheelbarrow frame in the manner shown in Fig. 2 and, in the event of it being desired to utilize the same for wheeling the device up a curb or over an obstruction, the eye N is detached from the hook upon the frame, the wheel of the device raised in any suitable manner, as by tilting the frame upon its legs, to allow the board to be inserted and the wheel in the position shown in Fig. 1, after which the wheel barrow may be pushed forward, the wheel engaging the slot in the end of the board and allowing the wheel to make a partial revolution, the bolt Gr moving in the slot K. After the wheelbarrow has passed upon the higher level, the board may be fastened back to its normal position as shown in Fig. 2.

hat I claim to be new is 1. An attachment for wheelbarrows comprising, in combination with the wheelbarrow, a board pivotally connected thereto and forming an inclined bridge up which the wheel is adapted to travel.

2. In combination with the frame of a wheelbarrow having an axle and a wheel thereon, elongated loops through which said axle passes, and a board fastened to said loops and forming a bridge up which the wheel is adapted to travel.

3. In combination with the frame of a wheelbarrow having an axle and a wheel thereon, elongated loops through which said axle passes, a bolt connecting corresponding ends of said loops, and a board having an elongated slot therein through which said bolt passes and is adapted to have a play.

4. In combination with the frame of a Wheelbarrow having an axle and wheel thereon, elongated loops through which said axle passes, a bolt connecting corresponding ends of said loops, a board having an elongated slot therein through which said bolt is adapted to have a play, one end of said board being slotted to receive the wheel.

5. In combination with the frame of a wheelbarrow having an axle and a wheel thereon, elongated loops through which said axle passes, a bolt connecting corresponding ends of said loops, a board having an elongated slot therein through which said bolt is adapted to have a play, one end of said board being slotted to receive the Wheel, an eye upon the rear portion of said board, a hook fastened to the Wheelbarrow and adapted to engage said eye.

6. In combination with the frame of a wheelbarrow having an axle and a wheel thereon, elongated loops through Which said axle passes, a bolt connecting corresponding ends of said loops, a board having an elongated slot therein through Which said bolt is adapted to have a play, one end of said board being slotted to receive the wheel, an eye upon the rear portion of said board, a hook fastened to the Wheelbarrow and adapted to engage said eye, a cross-piece of said wheelbarrow having a recess adapted to hold the rear end of the board from lateral movement.
