Patented Nov.v 9, 1869.

Letters Patent No. 96,703, dated November 9, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN DETACHING- HORSES FROM CARRIAG-ES The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'may concern: l
e Be it known that I, EDWARD I. JONES, of Shell Mound, in the county of Sunflower, and State of Mississippi, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Detaching Horses from Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accom panying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view;
Figure 2, a transverse section, taken in the line xx offig. 1;
Figure 3, arear elevation of a part of the Whittletree;
Figure 4, a transverse section. taken in the line y y of iig. 1; and l VFigure 5, an end view.
Like letters designate likel parts in all the iigures.
lhe nature of my invention consists in the peculiar' construction of a whifetree, by the operation of which the traces can be readily det-ached, in ease of accident to the vehicle, or should the horse become unmanageable.
f To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construetion and operation.
A represents the whifetree, which is pivoted to the cross-bar. of the shafts.
The ends of the whiietree have an extension of a hooked shape, their ends coming out even with the front of the whifiletree.
` To the whiletree are pivoted two spring-levers, B B. On each of these levers, near their outer ends,
is an extension, in the outer end of which is a bolt or 'v pivot, a, by means of which they are secured to the `whitlletree.
end may be brought up to or into the front part of the vehicle.
The two lower -ends of this strap pass across the top of the whitfletree, and under the inner ends of the levers B B, in whichare recesses for that purpose.
' c c. are inclined stops or projections on top of the whitetree, near the outer edges of the strap' O.
d d are straps secured to the cross-bar, and which pass around the ends of the whiietree, to prevent too much play of the same.
D D are strips or .bands that pass over the levers B B, and their ends are secured to the whiletree.
Its operation is as follows: `Tofasten the traces to the whfiietree, by drawing ou the upper end of the strap C, the inner ends ot' the levers B B will be raised' up above the stops c 0,'an'd the strap will then draw them back far enough to allow the end of the trace to be placed on their outer ends, and then draw the levers forward, until they have passed over and are in front of the stops c c, and the traces are securely attached to the whitfletree.
Incase of accident, when is is desired to suddenly detach the horse from the vehicle, by pulling up the strap G, the inner ends of the levers B B are raised up above the top of the stops c c, when the force being exerted on the traces will immediately draw the outer ends of the levers forward, and throw the inner-,ends backward into the position shown in dotted lines in iig. 1, which will allow the traces to slip o ofthe ends of the levers.
Having thus fully described. my invention,
-What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, is-'` v 'lhe combination of the whiiletree A, cleats c c, levers B B, and strap C, when constructed and oper,- ating substantially as shown and described.
Titnessesz EDWD. P. JONES.
