ROPE-CLAMP.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON W. RUSSELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope- Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadA therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates more particularly to logging apparatus and has for its object the obtaining` of a device for quickly and securely fastening the guy lines stationary in the apparatus.
In the present state of the art, it'is customary to secure the apparatus used for logging by guy lines which are fastened about trees, and it is usual to secure these lines by wrapping them several times about the tree so as to secure the requisite friction to prevent slipping. It is, however, necessary to first place the lines under tension, as the wrapping about the tree will as eifectuously prevent the tightening of the lines as they are instrumental in preventing slipping'back after the line is taut. Thus, if it is necessary to tighten one of the lines, the coils about the tree must be loosened and the line drawn taut, an operation usually requiring the attention of several men.
My invention is designed to avoid the dif`- culty above set forth by providing a simple rope clamp adapted to elfectually secure the line with but a single wrap about the tree. Furthermore, this clamp when loosened forms a guide for the rope,`which will permit of tightenino' by drawing u on the return strand and by attaching this strand to the hoisting drum of the engine the line may be extended without manual labor. When the line is taut, the clamp may be secured and will then prevent slipping without any injury to the rope.
In the drawings-Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the clamp; Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof; and Fig. 3 is a diagram illustrating the clamp in use.

B and C are the clamping jaws, which are vembraced by the frame A, the jaw B being swiveled to a threaded shank D passing through a correspondingly threaded aperture in the end of the frame. The jaw C is provided with guide lugs E which hold it from lateral movement in relation to the Specicaton of Letters Patent.

In use, the guy line J is clamped about a treeas indicated at K-and the clamp is then engaged with the two strands. This may be quickly accomplished by drawing the pin F, removing the jaw C, and, after the insertion of the two strands of the rope, replacing said jaw and pin. The return strand L of the line is then pulled either manually, or by the hoisting of the engine, until the line is taut, after which the handle H is turned to clamp the adjacent strands of the rope between the aws B and C.
To provide a firmer grip, the adjacent faces of the aws form a waved line, and are also preferably grooved to receive jthe strands of the rope. One end of each j aw is also preferably bent over, as at M, and bifurcated to embrace the adjacent jaw at N, which increases the grip upon the rope. At t-he same time, when the aws are separated, rounded faces are presented to the strands, which will not injure them as they are drawn through the clamp.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
l. A rope clamp comprising a U-shaped frame, a clamping screw engaging a threaded bearing in the central vportion of said frame, jaws slidable between the furcations of said frame and having parallel grooved adjacent faces, and a removable pin forming an abutment for one of said jaws permitting of its insertion and removal from the frame.
