MULTIPLE DOOR-BOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1910.
Application led April 18, 1910. Serial No. 556,012.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GOLDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple Door- Bolts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in multiple door bolts and more particularly to bolts especially adapted for locking a scuttle.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical scuttle lock whereby the scuttle may be quickly opened in case of lire, and will be securely locked against thieves.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:-
Figure 1 is a vertical section through a scuttle illustrating the application of my multiple bolt lock thereto; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 denotes a roof or other structure having a scuttle opening 2 closed by a scuttle 3.
My improved lock comprises a rotatably mounted pivot or shaft 4 arranged at or adjacent to the center of the inner side of the scuttle and having an enlarged base portion 5 which is rotatably arranged in a bearing and attaching plate 6, the latter being apertured and secured by screws or similar fastenings 7 The free end of the pivot 4 has a handle 8 and on its intermediate portion is a flange or collar 9 from which radiate four bolt-actuating arms or links 10. The arms or links 10 have their outer ends connected to slidably mounted bolts 11 arranged in casing members 12 containing springs 13, which latter project the bolts outwardly into engagement with keeper plates 14 secured, as shown at 15, to the walls of the scuttle opening 2. The outer extremities of the bolts 11 are beveled as shown at 16, and the upper faces of the keeper plates 14 are beveled at 17, whereby when the scuttle is lowered into position the device will be selflocking. The connecting links or arms 10 are longitudinally extensible and are composed of overlapped metal strap sections 18 formed with longitudinal series of openings 19 adapted to receive connecting bolts 20. The strap sections 18 have their extremities pivoted to the flange 9 and the bolts 11, as shown at 21 and 22 respectively.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the peculiar construction of my improved lock will enable it to be quickly and easily adjusted for and applied to scuttles of different sizes, and that it will effectively lock the scuttle against thieves. Furthermore, by simply turning the handle 8 in either direction, the bolts 11 are simultaneously retracted from engagement with the keepers 14, whereby the scuttle may be quickly raised, and when the scuttle is lowered into position the bolts are self-locking.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
The herein described multiple door bolt comprising in combination with a scuttle frameand a scuttle cover, beveled keeper plates secured in the frame at opposite points, an attaching and bearing plate secured centrally to the bottom face of the cover, and formed with a centrally arranged under cut bearing opening, a pivot having an enlarged upper end rotatable in said bearing opening, and a handle upon its lower end, the intermediate portion of said pivot being formed with a radially projecting flange, brackets secured to the bottom face of the cover adjacent to said keepers and containing spring projected bolts having beveled ends to co-act with said keeper plates, and longitudinally extensible' links arranged radially with respect to said pivot, and having their inner ends pivoted to its flange, and their outer ends pivoted to said bolts.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH GOLDEN.
