To all 'whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. T. DA- vins, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following'is a specification.

This invention relates to neckties and has for its object the provision on a necktie of novel means for engaging a collar button or stud, whether on the collar or shirt, to retain the necktie in proper position and, more particularly, the provision of a reversible cord or band carried by any desired part of the necktie and of any desired construction to carry out the object aforesaid and in addition thereto permit reversal of position of the attachment so that it may be disposed on either side of the necktie, thus permitting the use of both sides of the necktie and at the same time obtaining the advantages of a retainer.

In carrying out the invention either a cord, elastic or otherwise, or a band, possessing either easy slipping or frictional mmeans may be employed and the device located on the neckband, tying ends, or other desired position, and, if a cord be used, either a ring, hook, or button may be carried thereby to engage the buttonhole or stud and if a band, such band may be provided with tabs and have buttonholes. In short, the invention contemplates the provision of either a loop or a band, however formed or however equipped with attaching devices, which is so connected to the necktie that it may be reversed to lie on either side of the necktie but preferably has its points of connection with the necktie located in between the plies of the necktie and springing from the edges thereof.

In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a view of a necktie provided with the band; Fig. 2, a similar view with the band reversed; Fig. 3, a cross-section, somewhat enlarged, on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, illustrates the manner of reversing the band; Fig. 5, illustrates a modication of the band; Fig. G, illustrates a necktie provided with reversible cords; Fig. 7, a section, somewhat enlarged on line 7 -7 of Fig. 6; Fig. S, illustrates the manner of reversing the cord; and Figs. 9, 10 and 11 are modifications of the cord.

rl`he invention when it assumes the form of a band may be of the construction shown 1n Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 where the neckt-ie is vshown at 1 and the band at 2 having its edges 3 springing from the edges of the necktie and preferably entered between the plies of the latter and sewed thereto. This band may be provided with a buttonhole as shown by dotted lines if it is located at the back of the neckband, such buttonhole being to receive the rear collar button.

As shown in Fig. 5, the band may be provided with tab ends 2a having buttonholes, such tab ends being located at the junction of the neckband and tying ends of the necktie and adapted to engage the front collar button; a buttonhole 2" may be employed in the band vto engage the rear collar button. Where the band is used on ties provided with tabs, the band may be employed as a cover for the tabs to conceal them when their use is not desired. The band 2 may be provided with friotional material (Fig. 2) or with easy slipping material, or both (one on each side thereof) or formed of a material having either of the properties aforesaid. When it is desired to reverse the band, one end of the necktie is threaded under the band (Fig. t) and on being pulled completely therethrough, the previously concealed side of the band will then be exposed and hence either side of the necktie may be worn outermost as is commonly done and thus all of the advantages of a reversible tie are obtained with the added benefits of the present invention.

The invention may be carried out by the provision of one or more elastic or inelastic cords 5 (Figs. 6 to 11) which spring from the opposite edges of the necktie and are preferably secured between the plies thereof. The loops 5 if located on the depending or free end or ends of the neoktie will be adapted to engage the front shirt button or stud or buttonhole. As shown in Figs. 9, 10, and 11, hooks, rings, or buttons may be employed on the cord or cords used and the same is true if one or more of these cords be disposed on the necktie substantially at the junction of the neckband and tying ends thereof for engagement with the front collar-button or buttonholes. The cords permit the ends of the necktie to be threaded through them as shown in Fig. 8, and thus the cord or cords may be disposed on either side of the necktie, permitting either side to be worn outermost whereby the advantages of the ordinary reversible tie are obtained With the additional benefits arising from the use of the cord.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A necktie having a neckband and flee tying ends, a reversible loop or band attached toV opposite edges of the neckband and extending transversely thereof, free therefrom, and adapted to be positioned on either side of said necktie.

2. A necktie having free tying ends and a reversible loop or band Whose extremities are located between and connected to the plies of the necktie and spring from the opposite edges of the necktie, said loop or band extending transversely of the necktie,

free therefrom, and adapted tobe positioned on either side thereof by slipping the end of the necktie therethrough.

' 3. A necktie having free tying ends and va reversible band Whose edges are located between and connected to the plies of the necktie, said band being provided With a freely projecting end having means for engaging a shirt stud and being adapted to be positioned on either side of the necktie by slipping an end of the necktie therethrough.
