To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARINUS J. G. NY-
BORG, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have made certain new and useful Improvements or an Invention in Quick-Threading Surgical Needles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others to use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in hand sewing needles, especially those styled easy-threading needles, and the objects in view are :-first, the provision of means for preventing the friction or wear upon that portion of the thread that is attached to or in contact with the needle during the operation of stitching; second, the provision of means for preventing, obviating or necessitating the thread being passed endwise through a transverse eye, a longitudinal slot or channel for the thread to be attached to the needle; third, the provision of means for obviating or preventing the needle from slipping or gliding upon the thread when once threaded; fourth, the provision of means for preventing the thimble from cutting the thread attached to the needle.
The invention consists in certain novel construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed.
This kind and style of needle is formed of steel or material capable of springing or giving slightly in its organic structure.
This needle is designed for tailoring and surgical purposes, although it is, of course, within the scope of the invention to employ the same for any of the common purposes for which a needle may be used, and many slight alterations from the detailed structure of the needle may be used and employed within the spirit and scope of the present invention.
These objects are obtained by the employment of a needle comprising a main body portion formed with two separate suitable channels entering at the head end and on either side of the center of the needle, leaving a thin fin or partition between them, and passing longitudinally with the center line of the needle for a desired distance and provided with two narrow parallel longitudinal open ended slots formed on the side of the Specification of Letters Patent.

needle leaving the fin or partition between the said two slots and having a beveled cross slot, and provided with a thimble rest as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1, is a plan view of this form of needle; Fig. 2, represent-s a perspective view of the needle minus the point end of the same, embodying the organic structure and features of the present invention; Fig. 3, is a side view of the needle minus the point end of same showing the internal arrangement of the threading mechanism by dotted lines; Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the spring.
Throughout the several views like numerals refer to like parts.
The needle shown is on the same general form or shape as the ordinary common needle, except as to the shape or form of the head.
The head or threading mechanism which .is the essential part of my invention, is best shown in Fig. 2, in which numerals l and 2 indicate two separate channels of same size running parallel with and one on each side of the axial line of the needle, leaving a thin fin or partition 4 between them for a desired distance from the head of the needle. By cutting two narrow parallel longitudinal open ended slots through the shell of the needle, connecting said slots with the said two suitable channels, leaving the fin or partition between the said two slots and by cutting a beveled open ended cross slot through the needle shell at the place indicated by numeral 9, intersecting said cross slot with the said slots and the said channels, a longitudinal spring is formed on the side of the needle integral with the fin or partition or the main body of the needle as will hereinafter be more fully explained. A portion of the main body of the needle projects from the needle at the place indicated by numeral 8, being for the purpose of the thimble to rest and catch on instead of the thimble striking the sharp edge of said needle, as without the projection the thimble would have a tendency to cut the thread. I desire to taper said projection in cone shape in such manner that said projection will not interfere with the thread extending out of said channels 1 and 2. I disconnect the fin or partition from the main body of the needle at the place indicated by numeral 9, by cutting a beveled cross slot and cutting away a suitable portion on the Patented July 26, 1910. l
inside of said fin or partition making the recess for the thread and forming spring 5. The spring 5 is sufficiently tapered on the inside to present a smooth and guiding surface for the thread. The recess is also sufliciently tapered throughout and can be formed round or as a V shape, which would cause the thread to be tightly retained in the needle.
The edges 6 and 7 of the needle shell are inwardly tapered, also the edge of the spring opposite to edges 6 and 7 is tapered in such condition and in such manner as to make a guiding surface for the thread to be readily attached to the needle at the place indicated by numeral 3. The needle shell at the place indicated by numeral 3 is upwardly and inwardly tapered being for the allowance of the thread to be more readily attached to the needle, which is best shown in Fig. l. The needle can also be constructed by cutting two parallel longitudinal slots on the side of the needle, leaving the partition between the two slots and by folding over edges 6 and 7. The channels can be formed by milling or grinding, and when the edges 6 and 7 are so folded to each side the recess can also be formed by milling or grinding. The needle can also be constructed by forming a longitudinal center bore and forming a longitudinal slot on the side of the needle connecting said longitudinal bore: the partition or the spring can be set in or attached to the needle in a manner as if constructed integral with the main body of the needle, as heretofore mentioned. It is to be understood that the point end of the beveled spring is within the cylindrical walls of the needle in a manner and in such condition that the main body of the needle laps over the point on the beveled spring so that the spring will not lacerate or tear the material or flesh when in operation of stitching. The needle can also be constructed by swaging and by folding out the walls of the needle, and when the needle shell is so folded to each side, the recess for the thread can be formed by shearing or cutting away a suitable portion of the remaining partition, the cross-slot is then formed by cutting the opening indicated by numeral 9 for the passage of the thread into the recess; the walls of the needle shells are folded back, forming a perfect circular and round shape. The manner of threading this form of needle, is to draw the loop of the thread into slot 9 by pressing spring 5 into the needle with the thread until the thread has slipped by spring 5 and reversing the motion and drawing the thread toward the head end of the needle, when one section of the thread will slip .into channel 1 and the other section of the thread will slip into channel 2, owing to the tapered conditions of said slots and thenecessary loop of the thread-is contained and doubled around spring 5.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p A needle comprising a main body portion, formed with two separated open-ended, parallel channels and provided with a longitudinal and tapered spring, formed integral with said main body, having a beveled point and provided with a recess for the thread, also provided with a side cross-slot with means of communicating with the said channels and the said recess and provided with a projection of a portion of the needle-shell and the center partition of the main body portion of the needle for a thiinble-rest, substantially as described.
