ELMER 1VI. DECKlVIAN, OF WOODLYN, NEW JERSEY.
JUMPING-ROPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER M. DEoKuAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVoodlyn, county of Camden, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Jumping-Ropes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in jumping ropes, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective device of this description which while being flexible will be sufficiently stiff to readily carry when being swung, and a further object of my invention is to prevent the coils of the rope from being unduly distended, and a still further object of my invention is to provide for the turning of the rope independently of the handles so that the handles may remain sta tionary in the hands while the rope revolves upon its axis relative to the handles.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows my improved jumping rope in partial elevation and partial section so as to fully illustrate the connection between the handles and the rope. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the grips or handles showing its construction.
In carrying out my invention as here enibodied A represents the body of the rope which is preferably made of coiled wire through which a non-elastic cord B runs, the ends of said cord being secured in the studs C. The ends of the coiled wire body are also secured to studs C, preferably on the outside thereof by soldering or otherwise. Said studs C project into the coiled wire body and are loosely mounted on. the

handles D, which are in the form of loops or rings having flat bearing portions d. Said studs C are provided with heads E on their inner ends which hold said studs in place, whereby the handles serve as bearings for the studs, thus enabling the rope to revolve independently of the handles.
The handles D may be made of any suitable material, such as metal, fiber, celluloid or hard rubber and are adapted to be grasped in the hands of the person using the rope and remain stationary while the rope is being used.
The cord B being non-elastic prevents the coils of the body A from being unduly distended while at the same time permitting a certain amount of flexibility.
By my improvement a rope is provided which can be easily turned on account of being sufliciently stiff to carry with the handles thus permitting the user to manipulate the same more readily than the ordinary rope.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is
In combination with a flexible hollow body, of coiled wire, a non-elastic cord passing through said body, a handle in the form of a loop at one end of said body of coiled wire having a flat portion, and a headed stud passing through the fiat portion of said handle to project in said hollow body, said end of said body of coiled wire surrounding the unheaded end of said stud and being soldered thereto, and providing means whereby the stud is prevented from being disengaged from the handle by the engagement of the end of said coil with the outer face of said flat portion of the handle, one end of said non-elastic cord being secured to the free end of said unheaded end of said stud.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELMER M. DEOKMAN.
