FAYETTE HARDENBERGH, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
Letters Patent N 96,426, dated November 2, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part cf the same.
`To all' whom it may concern:
Be it. known that I, FAYn'rTE HARDEXBERGH, of the city and count-y of Providence, in the VState of' Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tool-Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following specitication, taken in connection with the di'awil'igs, making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, front'and side views-of the improved tool-post.
Figures 3, 4, and 5, exhibit different forms of a holding-block used with the post.
Figures 6, 7, and 8,1eprcsent dierent forms of tools that maybe used.
My invention seeks to secure all the advantages which result from the use of a tool, which does notl require to be refbrged, but which, when once properly shaped, can be usedl until worn out from repeated grindings; Heretofore it has, been customary to adapt this class of 'tools to a holder, which latter is made of the size required to tit the. ordinary lnortise in the Although such tools and holders serve in many cases a useful purpose, they have not come into general use, notwithstanding their many advantages, by reason ofthe fact that they must be, with the ordimuy form and construction of the tool-post, too small for any but the lighter classes ot' work.
My ilnpriwemcnt consists in the construction of a tool-post of particular form, and the colnbinatimi therewith ot' interchangeable toolholders adapted to t-wo or more tools ot' different forms and dimensions, and which present the tools to the work at the same or different angles.
Referring to tgs. l and 2 A is the substitute for the post heretofore commonly used. It is secured to the frame of the lathe by a clamp-bolt passing through the slot a in the bedpiece;
The portion of the post designated as B is at nearly a right angle with the portion A, its angle of inclination being such as is deemed most advisable, so as to enable the cutting-tool tobe held in a positionumost favorable to make its cut, having reference to the direction of the libre of the metal of the tool.A
'lhe face ofthe upright portion B is recessed to the depth of about seveneighths of au inch, and for thel width of about one and one-fourth inch, more or less.
The purpose of this recess is -to receive a metal block, G, which is the tool-holder proper.
This block is one of many which may bc fitted to such recess, and they are channelled, as at b, in a way best suited to accommodate tools of diiferentcforms and sizes, figs. 3, 4, and -5.
The block, with its tool, is held in the post'by clamp, D, as shown, or by other convenient means From the foregoing, it will be readily understood that the same post, by merely changing the holdingblock, can be used with a single tool ot' the largest size that for ordinary work` is employed, or with a gang of two or more tools; and this latter capacity is of great economy where both a right and a left-handed tool is required upon the same piece of work, or where, as in finishing oi't-op rollers for spinning-machinery, perfect identity in the length of the several barrels of the rollers is desired. f
I do not' claim as newthe employment of'a tool-v holder for a separate cutting-tool, whose cross-section` is the same throughout its length, as many varieties of such are'lmown; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tool-post, A B, constructed substantially as described, and combined with interchangeable tool-l1old ingblocks C, as specified.
