Description

H. E. MACY. WAGON BOX FASTENEE, APPLICATION FILED APR. 21, 1909.
962,231. Patented June 21,1910.
an is UNITE STAS ATEN FIGE.
WAGON-BOX FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 21, 1909.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Serial No. 491,239.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. MACY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chapman township, in the county of Clay and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon- Box Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a device for holding down wagon-bodies to the bolster and the objects are to diminish the noise incident to the rattling of the body upon the bolster and to a large extent prevent the wearing of the body against the standards. I attain these objects by means of the mechanism hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure l is a side elevation of a wagonbody resting upon the bolster with my device attached and in position for service; Fig. 2, a detailed View of a section of a wagon-body within the standard and resting on the bolster with my device secured thereto; Fig. 3 is aside view of Fig. 2.
Similar letters and figures of reference in dicate like parts throughout the several views.-
A indicates the wagon-body, B the standards and G the bolster.
A plate 1 is secured to the wagon-body near the top, its lower end projecting at right angles and perforated to receive the threaded eye-bolt 2, having burs 3 for adjusting the tension of the spring 4 which is hooked within the eye of the bolt 2, the lower end of said spring being attached to the threaded eye-bolt 5, forming a swiveljoint with the clevis 6 and having the adjusting burs 10; an eccentric crank 7 provided with lug 7 a is pivoted to the lower end of said clevis and in operation engages the downwardly projecting tip 9 of the plate 8 secured to the bolster and extending at right angles thereto. The dotted lines in Fig. 2 indicate the position of the clevis and lever when thrown off for the purpose of detaching the same from the plate 8, so the wagonbody may be removed. The lug 7 is made of sufficient length to throw the spring beyond a perpendicular line. Normally the spring not only holds the wagon box upon the bolster but it also holds the crank 7 against the plate 8 and with its lug 7 a conformably bearing against the tip 9.
For the more effectually accomplishing the objects desired, one such device is placed beside each standard.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. The combination with a wagon box and a bolster of a fastening device consisting of a tensioning spring, means for attaching one end of the spring to the wagon-box, and means for attaching the other end of the spring to the bolster and comprising a projecting plate secured on the bolster, a clevis carried at the lower end of the spring and a lever pivoted to the clevis and engaged under the plate, the lever having a projecting lug for engagement with the plate as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a wagon box and a bolster of a fastening device comprising a tensioning spring having an eye bolt pivoted at each end thereof, means for attaching one of the eye bolts to the wagon box and means for attaching the other eye bolt to the bolster.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY E. MAGY.
In the presence of M. C. UMSTEAD, O. E. KINCAD).
