Description

R. E. HUGHES;
PERGOLATOR.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 4, 190a.
Patented June 21,1910.
gmaanlroz abto' onuf RAYMOND E. HUGHES, OF I-IOLBROOK, ONTARIO, CANADA, A-SSIG-NOR OF ONE-THIRD TO CHARLES H. HARRISON, OF HOLBROOK, CANADA.-
PERCOLATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Application filed November 4, 1908. Serial No 461,047.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND E. Ensure, a subject of the King of England, residlng at Holbrook, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Percolators, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to cooking utensils, and more particularly to percolating devices.
It has for a particular object the provision of a receptacle formed of metal or other suitable material provided with a cover, the cover and receptacle being adapted to allow the free passage of fluid therethrough.
Another object is to provide a novel form of lifting means for the device.
A particular object of the invention is to provide such a device adapted to be utilized for making a large quantity of tea or coffee; and adapted to be submerged for the boiling of coffee or similar beverages.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side view of the device, Fig. 2 is a top view, Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view of the fastening means, Fig. 4 is a detailed view of a modified form of fastening means, Fig. 5 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1, showing the hinge, and Fig. 6 is a deta1l perspective view of the forward portion of the device.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a receptacle formed of wire screen, though it will be understood that any suitable material may be utilized. The receptacle carries at its upper edge an annular collar member 11 provided at one side with a suitable hinge portion 12 and having oppositely of the hinge portion an integral laterally extending tab 13 having a slot 14 therein, for a purpose to be subsequently indicated. The receptacle is provided with a cover 15 formed similarly and having a collar 16 around its lower edge similar to the one 11. The collar 16 is provided with lateral apertured flanges 17 and 17, one registering with the hinge 12 and the other with the flange 13. The flange 17 is extended somewhat more than the flange 17 and is provided with an oblong somewhat larger aperture A extending radially of the percolator. It may be noted that the flange 13 is similar to the flange 17 the slot 14 therein being spaced from the adjacent edge of the re ceptacle l0.
Engaged with the cover there is an integral pivot, support, and latch member 20 formed of wire, as shown. The member 20 is bent to present two parallel pieces of wire having at their junction a hinge loop 21 over which is engaged the hinge portion 12 of the collar 11. The adjacent bail portion 22 of each piece, extends upwardly through an opening B in the flange 17, over the top of the cover, centrally of which a loop 23 is formed in the wire and the bail portion continued to the front of the receptacle and downwardly thereover. The bail is carried through the slot A in the flange 17 and at a spaced distance therebelow is directed sharply inward, and bent downward at an acute angle. Then it is turned upward vertically to form a latch C. In Fig. 4 the latch has its extreme end portions C disposed slidably against the under face of the flange 17 outwardly of the slot therethrough.
It will be seen that a percolator is provided that can be manufactured at extremely low cost and having peculiar advantages. The bail member may be secured to the cover at intervals as shown at 25, but the securing means will not always be required, as the disposition of the end portions of the bail against the flange 17 and the engagement of the bail with the hinge 12 at the opposite side of the receptacle will generally be sufficient to support the cover. The engagement of the latch portion G with the flange 13 will be sufiicient for lifting engagement of the device.
Although the device is adapted for use in making large quantities of beverages, it willbe understood that it may be made in any desirable size, as the primary objectof the invention is simply to provide a percolator which is adapted to be submerged in a liquid without danger of the contents escaping.
What is claimed is A percolator comprising a permeable bottom member, a hinged sleeve carried by the bottom member, a slotted outwardly extending tab carried by the bottom member at a point opposite to the hinged sleeve, a top member removably disposed upon the bottom member, said top member having an outwardly extending flange located above the hinged sleeve and having a second oppositely disposed outwardly extending flange located above the'slotted tab, a wire engaged through the hinged sleeve, said wire extending upwardly at opposite sides of the hinged sleeve and through the flange the-reabove, said wire being turned inwardly above the flange and then having its portions turned in parallel relation to extend over the top, said portions having convolutions therein upon the top to produce registering upwardly extending loops, said wire having its portions beyond the loop extended downwardly over the second mentioned In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
