Description

G, V. SOUTHWORTH. BooK GVBR. APPLIUATION FILED JAN.16, 1909.

Book-COVER.
[o all whom 'it may concern:`
Be it known that I, GERTRUDE V. l). SOUTH- wonrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at 314 Highland avenue, Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Imoroveinents in Book-Covers, of which the fol owing is a specification. y
My invention relates'to book-covers used for the protection ofthe binding of books which are subject to much' use, such as the books of schools, public libraries, etc., and consists in a book-cover peculiarly formed and constructed so that it may be adjusted .and applied quickly, easily and accurately to the book. The cover of each particular size has a considerable range of adjustment so that it may be applied to books differing as to size, both in length, breadth-and thlckness.
The essential features of my peculiar cover is the one-piece blank of suiiciently heavy paper 'or other suitable material, havinga substantially rectangular central body p0rtion rovided with a substantially continuous ap valon its upper-'ed e, and iiaps en the right'an left edges an separatelower laps-on its lower edge, said lower fiaps being respectively adjacent to thetwo ends; the two lower flaps are turned in and u against the body and the left end flap 1s turned in and gummedto the left-lower i'lap forming a pocket for the lower corner of the front cover of the book. Two converging lines, or two series of converging lines, the lines of each seriesv bein parallel) are printed adjacent to the top o the blank and on each sidel of the center. Horizontal lines parallel to the ..pper edge of the blank may be printed between, or across, the -converging lines.
My invention will be understood by reference to the drawing herewith, showing the inside of the book-cover, in which the reference letters and numerals of this descriptionl are used to' indicate the various parts.
Tg1 the drawing Figure A indicates the substantially rectangular body of the blank or cover having integral iaps as follows; l the left end flap; 2 and 3 the left andright lower flaps; 4 the right end ap; and a substantially continuous upper ap having its left, central, and right portions indicated respectively by the numerals 5, 6, 7 which is out to form separate flaps, as hereinafter described, when the `cover is being applied to Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 14k, 19M). l
Application filed January 16, 1909. Serial No. 472,586.
and b are essential but it is more convenient to print the series of parallel lines to guide the cuts in separating the central upper flap 6.' The horizontal lines c, c etc. are also convenient but yof less importance.
To. complete the cover ready to be delivin as shown and pasted 4at 10, forming a ocket to receive the lower corner of the ront cover ofthe book; iiap 3 is folded up to serve as a guide for the back cover of the book, in applying the cover to the book. Gum is also applied at 11, 12 and 13 as indicated.
To apply the cover to a book, first insert the lower corner of the front cover ofthe book in the pocket formed by flaps 1 and Q. T hen-mark the particular horizontal line c indicating the top of the book, and on said line mark at both sides the converging lines which at that point are sufficiently spaced just to include the back of the book, where case the horizontal lines are not printed, the same indication maybe made merely by E,cut along the two converging lines from the upper edge to the line, or marks, indicating the topof the'book, to se arate flap'6 from flaps 5 and 7. Then fold in flap 6 (and flap 8 when used) to be outside of the back of the book; adjust iiap 3 over the back /cover of the book; fold down iap 5 snugly and gum to iap 1 by moistening the gummed portion 11; Afold down viap 7 over the top edge of the back cover of the book and finally fold in the flap l snugly to fit against'the vertical edge of the back cover of the book, and gum it to liaps 3 and 7 by the gummed portions 12 'and 13.
My book-cover is economical to manufacture and simple and` convenient to apply to books, because it is strictly a one-piece book-cover, cut or stamped at one operation,
and b, b', b2, b3, etc. Only the outer lines c they cross the horizontal line as marked. In,
over the top edge of the cover of the book ered to the users, flaps 1 and 2 are turned marking both the two correct converging lines exactly at the top of the book. Then from suitable material suchas rather heavy manila paper; by the initially made ocket t; by means of the converging parallels the cutting of the central top flap is accurately indicated and by the horizontal parallels, when used, the true line for folding in the top flap, according to the height of the book, is indicatbd. It will thus be seen that my book-cover has a wide range of adjust ability' for books of various sizes and may be easily removed from books.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim 1s',-
l. As a new article of manufacture a book-cover composed' of a single piece of paper and having a central substantially rectangular body portion and integral flaps on the four edges of said body, said flaps being adapted to be folded inwardly, and two converging series of lines inscribed on the upper -portion of thevinner surface of the cover, the lines of-each 'series being parallel and the two series being arranged respectively on each side of the center,
2. In a one-piece book-cover, the combination with a substantially rectangular body portion, of left and right flaps on the lower Kedge of the body, said flaps being turned up in alinement against the inner surface o the body, a left edge flap, extending substantially from end to end of/the left edge ofthe body, said edge flap being turned in and gummed by its lowerv end to the outer surface of the left lower flap, forming a 'pocket for the front cover of the book to be covered, a single, continuous upper flap extending substantially fromend to end yof the u per edge of the body, a right Hap exten ing substantiall from end to end of the right edge of the ody, two converging series of parallel lines printed on the upperportion of the inner surface of the book-cover said series being arranged one on each side 4of the center of the book-cover and a third series of parallel lines printed across the converging lines below the upper edge of turned in and having its lower end lying over and gummed to the left end of the lower left iiap, a continuous upper flap on the upper edge of the body and a right flap on the right edge of the body, um for moistening on the inner surface o the left end portion of the upper flap and on the upper and lower portions of the right lap, two converging series of arallel lines printed on the inner surface oi) the cover, said series being arranged one on each side of the center and a series of parallel horizontal lines printed across the lower portion of the series of converging lines.
In testimony' whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
