ERNEST OLDENBUSCI-I, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED MATCH-BOX HOLDER AND CIGAR-CUTTER.
Application filed October 19, 1909.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June '7, 1910.
Serial No. 523,409.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST OLDENBUSCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Match-Box Holder and Cigar- Outter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in holders adapted to receive matches or match-boxes, and having connected therewith a cigar cutter.
My improved match-box holder is adapted for receiving and protecting the common form of match box, and it is the location,
'construction and arrangement of the cutter which embodies the main features of my invention. The cutter is secured to the end of the holder and operates to limit the in ward movement of the box and to permit the box to be automatically opened upon the insertion of a cigar within the cutter. The cutter does not in any way interfere with the free opening of the box, and the top of the cigar removed by the cutter falls outside rather than inside the box.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing in dotted lines a convenient way of holding the device to aid the cutting of the end of a cigar; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the holder and looking toward the cutter end.
My improved holder and cutter in its preferred form is preferably constructed of a single piece of sheet metal, cut and bent to the desired form and having a cutter blade carried thereby and movable in respect thereto. In the form illustrated, a piece of sheet metal is cut to the proper shape and bent to form a top wall 10, a bottom wall 11, a side wall 12, and an end flange 13. The holder is adapted for receiving the ordinary type of match-box, in which there are an openended cover section A, rectangular in cross section, and a box 13, slidable into the end of this cover section. One side wall of the cover section is ordinaril provided with a coating or composition upon which the matches may be scratched to ignite them.
The top and bottom walls 10 and 11 of my improved holder may be made of the same size as the top and bottom of the cover section A, and may be ornamented in any suitable manner or left plain, as desired. The side wall 12 is substantially equal to the thickness of the cover section A, and the top and bottom normally incline slightly toward each other, so as to frictionally or resiliently grip the box cover section A.
- The end flange 13 is formed from an extension of one of the walls of the holder proper, and is bent at a right angle in re spect to that wall. As shown, the flange 13 is integral with the top wall 10. This end flange constitutes a part of the cutter and is provided with an opening 14, into which the tip of the cigar may be inserted. At the base edge of the flange, that is, the line of intersection of the flange and the top wall 10, I provide a slot 15, up through which extends a cutter blade 16. This cutter blade is secured to the inner surface of the flange adjacent one end of the latter by means of a suitable rivet 17 and the upper and outer end of the cutter blade is provided with a laterally extending flange 18, constituting a thumb plate against which a pressure may be applied in the operating of the cutter blade, and which normally lies directly in engagement with the top wall 10. With the cutter depressed, the only portion which extends up throu h the plate, is this flange or thumb plate. gne edge of this thumb plate preferably extends outwardly a slight distance beyond the flange 13, so as to constitute a projection or extension, which permits the thumb plate and cutter to be readily raised to the position indicated in the drawings. The cutter blade has any suitable form of cutting edge, which moves past the opening 14 upon applying pressure to the thumb plate 18.
In the use of my improved device, the match box with its cover section is inserted within the holder, so as to lie in engagement with the side wall 12 and to be limited in its lengthwise movement in one direction by the flange 13. When it is desired to cut oif the end of a cigar and light the same, the box may be held in the hand substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1 and with the cutter blade raised. The box may be partially opened by applying pressure directly to the end of the box, or the mere insertion of a cigar through the opening 14 pushes the box part-way open, as indicated in Fig. 1. The thumb of the left-hand is in proper position to apply pressure to the plate 18 and clip off the end of the cigar. The cigar is then put in the mouth and as the box has been opened by the insertion of the cigar and as the friction surface C is exposed on the outer side of the box, a match may be very readily removed from the box and struck upon the surface C.
It is of course evident that various changes may be made in the construction of my improved device and within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a single sheet of metal bent to form parallel top and bottom Walls, a side Wall connecting the top and bottom walls, and an end flange depending from the top Wall and independent of the bot-tom Wall or side wall, there being a slot extending along the angle of intersection of said top wall and said flange through a portion of the length thereof, and said flange having an opening therein to receive the top of a cigar to be cut, a cutter pivoted to the inner surface of said flange adjacent one end thereof and normally disposed beneath the top wall and covering said opening, said cutter being movable upwardly through said slot to uncover said opening, and a thumb piece integral with said cutter at the end thereof opposite to the pivotal support and normally disposed in engagement with the upper surface of the top Wall.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a single sheet of metal bent to form parallel top and bottom Walls, a side Wall connecting the top and bottom Walls, and an end flange depending from the top Wall, there being a slot extending along the angle of intersection of said top Wall and said flange through a portion of the length thereof, and said flange having an opening therein to receive the top of a cigar to be cut, a cutter pivoted to the inner surface of said flange adjacent one end thereof and normally disposed beneath the top Wall and covering said opening, said cutter being movable upwardly through said slot to uncover said opening, and a thumb piece integral With said cutter at the end thereof opposite to the pivotal support and normally disposed in engagement with the upper surface of the top Wall, and having a portion thereof extending beyond said flange to facilitate the raising of the cutter.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST OLDENBUSCH.
