WIRE-STRETCHER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BOYD BYRON BOBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haynes, in the county of Adams and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence building apparatus, and more particularly to wire stretchers, and has for an object to provide such a device which will be of extremely small size, which will comprise but few parts, and which will require but one operator to manipulate it and fasten the wires stretched.
A particular object of the device is to provide a novel form of wire take-up adapted to continuous operation to stretch a wire to any extent desired, yet without the necessity for a complicated reel.
Another object is to provide a novel method of anchoring the stretcher.
A further object is to provide a stretching lever and fulcrum adapted to cooperate in a novel manner for stretching wire.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a top view of the device secured to a post or engaged therewith, Fig. 2 is a side view of the wire engaging side of the device, Fig. 3 is a rear view of the device.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a stretcher comprising an anchor member 10 comprising integrally formed right angled arms 11 and 12, the arm 12 carrying adjacent its junction with the arm 11 a lug 13 having a circular serrated face 1 1 presented toward the junction of the arm and outwardly of which there is an eccentrically pivoted disk 15 having its serrated edge disposed toward the lug l3 and carrying an operating stem 16, as shown. its outer end being the pivotal point. Adj acent its junction with the pivot portion 18, the lever carries a lug 19 similar to the one 13 and having pivoted outwardly thereof an eccentric disk 20 similar to the one 15. Each of the disks l5 and 20 are pivoted upon pin members 21 upon which are engaged small springs 22 coengaged with the disks to hold the disks yieldably engaged against the lugs 19 and 13. The inner edges of the arms 11 and 12 are provided with teeth 23 for engagement with a post to prevent rotary slipping of the anchor therearound as will be subsequently apparent. Spaced inwardly of the outer end of the arm 12 there is a check pin 21 and outwardly of the pin there is pivoted a lever 25 carrying a pin 26 adapted for adjustable engagement with a chain 27 secured to the outer end of the arm 11. The chain is adapted for engagement with a post to retain the anchor thereon, the teeth 23 being disposed against the post and the chain 27 carried therearound and engaged over the pin 26, the lever 25 having been previously oscillated inwardly of the pin 24. The lever 25 is then drawn outwardly to take up the slack in the chain 27 and upon being brought into contact with the pin 24, the tension of the chain 27 will hold it in locked position thereagainst.
In operation, the stretcher is engaged with the post as above described, and the wire to be stretched is disposed between the disks 15 and 20 and the lugs 13 and 19, the disks being removed from engagement with the lugs by means of the operating stems. Continued oscillation of the lever 17 will then take up the wire to any extent desired, as will be readily understood.
