To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAooB P. HoLTz- HOUSER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasp-Handles for lashing-Machines and other Containers, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide in simple and inexpensive form a device by means of which the cover of a washing machine or like container can be secured in place, the same part which acts as the latching member in one of its positions acting also when in another position as a handle by means of which the cover can be raised and lowered.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a washing machine to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a detail view on enlarged scale of the latching member. Fig. 3 is a detail view on enlarged scale of the locking member.

In the drawings a denotes part of a tub, I) the cover which is hinged thereto in the usual manner; 0 denotes in general the locking part of my device which is mounted on the tub and cl denotes in general the latching part of the device which is mounted on the cover. The part 0 in the embodiment illustrated comprises a base-plate 1 having suit able screw-holes 2 to receive the screws by which the plate is secured to the tub, an ofiset lip 3 with an outstanding locking projection 4 forming a locking shoulder 5 on its under side, its lower front edge being inclined as at 6.

The base-plate l is preferably stamped to shape out of sheet metal so that the offset lip 3 is somewhat resilient. The base-plate also supports a handle 20 of usual construction, there being a similar handle secured at the opposite side of the tub forming a means for lifting the entire tub when necessary.

The latch part (Z comprises a base-plate 11 which is secured to the cover near the edge thereof; what I term a hasp-handlelatch 12 is pivotally supported in this baseplate; this latch is arched as at 13 so that it embraces but does not touch the edge of the cover. The bar 14: of the latch normally lies against the incline 6 a little above the shoulder 5 on the locking projection 4. To lock the cover in place the bar 14 is pressed against the incline 6 and there is suflicient spring in the metal to permit it to ride down the incline and snap under the shoulder 5. This shoulder is preferably notched slightly to more surely hold the bar against accidental displacement. Ofisetting the lip 3 which carries the locking projection 4 facilitates the interlocking of the parts as it constitutes a slightly yielding support for the locking projection. The latch can be readily disengaged from the locking projection and then serves as a handle, when in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, by which the cover can be raised and lowered.

I claim 1. In a device of the character described the combination with the container and its cover, of a base-plate mounted on said container, an offset lip on said base-plate, a locking projection on said offset lip, a latch member pivotally mounted on the upperside of said cover and arched to embrace the edge of said cover, a handle-bar on said latch adapted to engage said locking projection.

2. In a device of the character described the combination with a container and its cover, of a latch member pivotally mounted on said cover, a yieldingly supported locking projection fixedly mounted on said container, and a handle-bar on said latch adapted to engage said locking projection.
