JOHN T. RIDGWAY, OF I-IILLSBORO, OHIO.
SILO.
Patented May 117, 1910. Serial No. 504,788.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, JOHN T. RmewAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsboro, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Silos; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to silos for the storage of grain.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a silo which is formed of terra cotta or other acid and weather resisting material and is made of a plurality of sections.
lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a silo embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is a vertical, central longitudinal section thereof; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 38 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings for a more particular description of the invention, the silo is formed of a plurality of upright cylindrical sections 1, which are made of terra cotta, fire clay, or other acid and weather resisting material. Each section, with the exception of the lower or base section is provided with a vertical door opening 2, the walls of which are beveled as at 3, to receive the correspondingly beveled edges of the removable doors 4, which are formed from sections of material forming the silo sec tions. The lower or base section is provided with an annular supporting flange 5, which rests upon the ground or other support while the upper end of the base section as well as the upper ends of the other sections are provided with the annular enlargements or flanges 6, and when arranged in position, the enlargement or flange of one section receives the lower end of the next upper section. The numeral 7, indicates the cover for the top section, which cover is provided with an annular flange 8, which seats upon the shoulder 9, formed at the upper end of the upper section. By providing the cover with an annular flange as shown, instead of a solid extension to fit in the upper section, the silo may be packed more nearly to the top of the upper section, as the space inclosed by the flange of the cover provides for the accommodation of the upper portion of the body of a person or persons while the silo is packed. The upper section is also provided with an exit door opening 10, to receive the discharge spout of the blast which delivers the grain into the silo, to provide for the exit of the person or persons who do the packing, at the completion of the packing operation.
It will be understood of course, that the sections may be made of any length or lengths desired and as many may be used as is found desirable in erecting a silo of the proper height.
By beveling the walls of the door openings and the edges of the removable doors, it will be obvious that when the grain is packed, the doors will fit tightly in the door openings and prevent the entrance of any air or moisture.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A silo of the class described comprising a plurality of hollow upright sections, each provided at its upper end with an annular flange adapted to be arranged in position with the lower end of each section fitting upon the upper end of the next lower section within the flange of the latter, and a removable cover for the upper section, said cover having an annular depending rim to seat upon the top of the top section within the flange of the latter, the rim of the cover forming a continuation of the silo.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN T. RIDGVVAY.
