OPERATING MECHANISM FOR DRAINAGE-PLUGS.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY J. GEURINK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Mechanism for Drainage-Plugs; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in operating mechanisms for drainage plugs of lavatory bowls.
One of the objects of my invention is the provision of an operating mechanism which is simple in construction, effective in operation and will not get out of order.
A further object is the provision of an operating mechanism having a construction such that when the plug is raised so as to permit the water to drain from the bowl the parts are locked against movement due to the weight of the water or the weight of t-he parts of the mechanism itself so that it will be impossible for the plug to drop back into its seat unless the operating handle itself is shifted manually.
A still further object is the provision of an operating mechanism which can be readily employed by adjust-ment for bowls of different sizes.
My invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combination of parts which will be described in the speci` tication and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing a portion of the bowl and the operating mechanism in the position with the drainage plug raised; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through a portion of the bowl showing the mechanism in elevation, the section being taken at right angles to the section of F ig. 1, the full lines showing the position of the parts of the operating mechanism when the plug is raised and the dotted lines the position of said parts when the plug is on its seat; and F ig. 3 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 1 showing a portion of the operating mechanism and the drainage plug on its seat or in its lowest position.

sign and in the present case is provided with a horizontal supporting portion 1l integral with the bowl. At the bottom of the bowl there is an opening in which is fixed a bushing 12 through which the drainage takes place and which receives the drainage plug 13 having at the top a disk-like portion 14C the edge of which is preferably slightly beveled and engages the upper part of the bushing 12, and having vertical ribs 15 which are adapted to engage the inner wall of the bushing during the sliding movement of the plug, and at the bottom having a base 16, the lower face of which is flat and horizontal and forms a bearing surface which is engaged by the raising and lowering member to be described. The lower end of the bushing 12 is threaded and receives the end of a nipple or collar 17 of the drainage pipe, said nipple having spherical enlargement 18 from the side of which extends in a horizontal direction a tubular projection 19 which forms a bearing for a rocking operating shaft or rod 2O having at one end in the interior of the nipple or collar 17 a crank or offset portion 21 which engages the lower flat face of the drainage plug and raises and lowers the latter when rocked in its bearing, and at the outer end has secured thereto a double crank or cross arm 22 having intermediate its ends a boss 23 provided with an opening preferably rectangular in cross section and through which the correspondingly shaped end 24 of the operating shaft 20 extends and in which it is secured. The tubular projection 19 is threaded on the exterior and receives a stuifing box or packing gland 25 provided on the itnerior with packing 26 which prevents leakage around the shaft 20.
In the horizontal portion 11 of the bowl is an opening 26 in which is secured a supporting member 27 for a portion of the operating mechanism, said member being in the form of a casting which is provided with a vertical slot 28 and has at the top a horizontal fiange 29 which engages the top of the portion 11 of the bowl, a downwardly extending threaded flange 30 which receives a clamping nut 31 located in a recessed portion 32 on the lower side of the horizontal portion 11 of the bowl, and a downwardly extending arm or projection 33.
Extending through the slot 28 of the member 27 is an operating handle 34 which is pivotally mounted on or fixed to a pin 35 extending across said slot 2S, said leveil being adapted to be rocked back and forth to raise and lower the plug. Pivotally mounted upon a suitable axle or fulcruni 3G carried by the lower end of the downwardly projecting arm 33 is a double bell-crank or T-shaped member having a pair of oppositely extending arms 3T and 3S and an arm 3S) extending upwardly at right angles to the arms 3T and 3S, said arm 3U having an elongated slot -lO which receives a pin or screw -lel secured in the lower end of the operating handle 3l. yl`he length of the slot l0 is such that this double bell-crank can be rocked back and forth by swinging the handle through an arc of approximately 90 degrees. 'l he movement of the double bellcrank is transmitted to the double crank or cross arm "2, said cross arm being directly below the bell-crank and being held parallel to the arms 5T and 38 by means of a pair of rods l2 and 43, each of said rods being connected at its upper end to one end of one of the arms 3l and 38 and having an operative connection to the correspoinling end of the cross arm Q2 below. ln this instance the upper end of each rod is bent at right angles. to the main portion thereof and extends through an opening in the end of one of the arms of the bell-crank and is held in place by a nut il, and each rod is connected to the corresponding end of the cross arm 22 by nieans of a stud l5 having a reduced portion passing through an opening in the end of the cross arm and held in place by a nut lill, and having also a transverse opening extending through the body portion thereof, said rod extending through 'the opening and being secured in place by a set screw at?. The ends of the rods d2- and -l extend below the studs la for a purpose to be referred to later. rfhus it will be seen that as the. handle 3l is shifted to the right. or to the left, the double bell-crank will be rocked upon the fulcrum 36 and at the same time. the cross arm 22 is similarly rocked shifting the operating shaft 2O and the crank 2l approximately through an arc of 90 degrees and raising or lowering the drainage plug depending upon the direction in which the handle is swung. lt will be apparent that the mechanism is simple in its construction and operation and that the construction is such that the mechanism is in little danger of getting out of order or failing to operate. Furthermore when the plug is raised the mechanism is practically locked against movement except by shifting the handle and hence the plug can not be forced back into placeonto its seat by the pressure of the water in the bowl or by the weight of the plug and parts of the operat ing mechanism for the reason that any force or pressure exerted by the bell-crank upon the pin or arm stl of the handle is substantially in line with the handle itself and will have no tende cy to shift the latter. lt will also be seen that this mechanism can be used for bowls of different depths or sizes withoutl any alteration in the construction or in the size or length of parts for the reasons that. the arms and lil are adjustable in the plugs l5, and consequently the distance between the cross arm 22 and the arms ZT and 2S can be readily varied.
l do not desire to be confined to the exact details shown, but aim in my claims to cover all modifications which do not involve a departure from the spirit and scope of my invention.
.Vhat l claim is l. In combination with a lavatory bowl having a drainage opening and a drainage plug, a shaft having at one end an offset portion adapted to engage said plug and a crank arm fixed to said shaft near the oppo site end, an operating handle, a bell-crank lever pivoted below said handle, one of the arms of said bell-crank lever having a pin and slot connection with said handle, and a rod connecting the other arm of said bellcrank to said crank arm on said shaft.
2. ln combination with a lavatory bowl having a drainage opening and a drainage plug, means for shifting said plug comprising a shaft extending through the drainage pipe below the plug and having an offset portion adapted to engage the bottom of said plug and near its outer end a double crank arm, an operating handle, a double bellcrank pivoted below said handle and having a pair of oppositely extending arms and an arm having a pin and slot connection with said handle, and a pair of parallel rods connecting the ends of said oppositely extending arms to the ends of the double crank or cross arm on said shaft-.
ln combination with a` lavatory bowl having a drainage opening and a drainage plug, a rocking shaft having means at one end adapted to engage and shift said plug and near its opposite end a double crank arm, a pivoted operating handle, a double bell-crank pivoted below said handle and having a pair of oppositely extending arms and an arm having a pin and slot connection with said handle, and a pair of parallel rods connecting said oppositely extending arms of the bell-crank to said double crank or cross arm on said rocking shaft.
4A. ln combination with a lavatory bowl having a drainage opening and a drainage plug, a drainage pipe atthe bottom of said bowl, aV rocking shaft extending laterally through said pipe and having at its inner end an offset portion adapted to engage said plug so as to shift the same, a double crank arm secured intermediate its ends to the outer end of said shaft, a pivoted operating handle, a double bell-crank pivoted below said operating handle and having a pair of oppositely extending arms and an arm at right angles thereto and having a pin and slot connection with the lower end oi' said handle, and a pair of parallel rods connected to the ends of said oppositely extending arms of the bell-crank and to the ends of said double crank or cross arm on the roel:- ing shaft.
5. In combination with a lavatory bowl having a drainage opening and a drainage plug, a horizontal rocking shaft mounted below said plug and having means at one end adapted to engage and shift the plug and having at its opposite end a crank, a pivoted operating handle, a bell-crank pivoted below said handle, one of the arms of said bell-crank having a pin and slot connection with the lower end of said handle, and a rod connected to the other arm of said bell-crank and having an adjustable connection with the crank on said shaft.
