PLATE-LIFTER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANGELO PANASOI, a citizen of the Kingdom of Italy, residing at 52 Madison avenue, in the city of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate-Lifters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices for washing dishes and the object of my invention is to produce a device by which the dish may be safely held in very hot water without burning the hand of the operator. I accomplish this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my dish-washing device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of my dish-washing device. Fig. at is a side elevation of the modified form shown in Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame of the dish-washing device. The frame A is provided with the handle B and is preferably made of heavy wire. The body of the frame may be rectangular as shown in Fig. 1 or round, as shown in Fig. 3. At the bottom of the frame are brackets C, C forming a seat for one edge of the dish.

D is a secondary frame mounted slidably upon the frame A. The frame D has a ring E located upon the handle B in a suitable'position so that the operator holding the handle B in one hand may insert one of the fingers of that hand into the ring E and thus operate the frame D to take up or release a dish. The frame D is mounted to slide in the sleeves F, F.

S is a spring, one end of which bears against the shoulder or bracket G attached to the handle B, and one end against the frame D, so that a person by taking the handle B in one hand, with a finger in the ring E, may operate the device. By drawing upward on the ring E the operator will compress the spring S and open the device for the insertion of a dish into the seat 0, and upon releasing the ring E the spring S will force the frame D back and the seat H will engage the opposite edge of the dish and hold it secure.

In operation the dish is deposited at one edge in the seat C, C and the frame D is slid upward by the ring E until the seats H, H will be removed sufliciently to engage the opposite edge of the dish so that the dish will rest securely in the seats C, C at one edge and the seats H, H at the opposite edge and in this position may be inserted in boiling hot water without injury to the operator.

In order to expand or contract the frame A for larger or smaller dishes, as the case may be, I make the frame in two sections, so that one section A will slide over the other section A and I make the notches J, J in the frame A and the springs K, K attached to the other section to engage the notches J, J so that the frame can be expanded or contracted, as desired, and held in the desired position by the springs K, K and the notches J, J.

As a modified form of my dish-washing device I construct the frame A rounding, as shown in Fig. 3, without any expanding device. Made in this way it is convenient to take small sized dishes and hold them securely while being subjected to the action of very hot water and by making the frame D and the spring S of considerable length difierent sized dishes can be used without the expanding device for the frame A shown in Fig. 1.

What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A dish-washing device consisting of a frame containing a seat on its lower extremity adapted to hold the edge of a dish, said frame consisting of overlapping parts slidably mounted upon each other, a secondary frame slidably mounted upon the first named frame, a handle to the first named frame, a ring attached to the secondary frame below the end of the handle of the first named frame and adapted to be operated by a finger of the hand of the operator holding the said handle, a spring bearing at one end of the first named frame and the other end on the secondary frame adapted to hold the secondary frame in a downward position upon the first named frame, a seat at the lower extremity of the secondary frame oppo-site the seat upon the first named frame adapted to hold the opposite edge of a dish the lower end of the frame D so as to form l located in the first named seat.

dish at its lower extremity, said frame consisting of two parts overlapping each other, means for expanding and contractlng said frame by sliding one of the overlapping parts over the other, a secondary frame slidably mounted upon the first named frame, seats at the lower extremity of the secondary frame adapted to hold the opposite edge of the dish resting in the seat on the first named frame, a spring adapted to force the secondary frame downward upon said dish when located in said seats means for operating said secondary frame, substantially as described for the purposes set forth.
