Be it known that I, FRANK BROWN, a subject of King EdwardfVII, residing at Beverly, in the county offEsseX and State of llassa'chusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cradles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in baby cradles, and the object is to provide a cradle comprising a swinging body consisting' of' a receptacle to receive the baby and movable lateral guards actuated by the swinging movements ofI said receptacle, whereby when the receptacle is swung toward either side the guard on the opposite side isy raised to such an extent as to prevent the baby from rolling out, and the object is further to provide means which may be operated to lock the swinging portion of the cradle in iiXed position when'it is so desired.

The invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specication andl particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, 6 is a support consisting of two uprights 7, 7 connected to each other at their upper extremities by a top rail 8 and connected to each other at the bottom by rods 10, 10, each upright being provided with suitable feet 11, 11 which may be equipped with casters 12, 12. On the support 6 a body 13 is swingingly mounted in any suitable manner as by providing the same with vertical arms 14, 14 hung on pivots 15, 15 on the uprights 7, 7, respectively, whereby said body is capable of swinging laterally.

The arms 14, 14' are preferably provided, respectively, with offset portions 16, as shown in Fig. 1. As it may sometimes be desirableA to prevent lateral swinging of' the receptacle, I provide suitable means for locking the same, such means inv this instance eonsisting of a collar 17 mounted on and slidable vertically on one ofthe uprights 7 and provided with suitable projections 18 which are adapted to straddle the adjacent oifset portion 16 when said col'- lar is moved upwardly from the position shown. in fulllines in Fig. 1 to the position shown in dotted lines therein. The collar may be held in one position or the other by any suitable means such as a clamping screw 19 havingscrew-threaded engagement with one of a pair of ears 2O provided' on said collar, whereby said collar may be caused to grip the upright.

Located on opposite sides of the' body' 13 are two guards 21, 21 which preferably form a part of a second swinging' body 22 surrounding the body 13, said bodies being pi'votally connected to each other by pivots 23, 23 and' the'body 22 being provided with downwardly projecting'arms 24 swingingly connected" to the uprights 7 preferably by providingsaidl arms, respectively, with slots 25 in which are located pins 26, respectively, secured to said' uprights, whereby when the body 13is swung* laterally the body 22 is actuated thereby thus raising and lowering the guards 21. rlihus, for example, if the body 13 be swung toward one side, thel guard upon the opposite side is raised, as shown in Fig. 3.

Secured to the guards 21, respectively, are shields 27 formed of suit-able flexible sheet material, these shields being secured to the lower portion of opposite sides of the receptacle which constitutes a part of the swinging body 13 and each shield having n suiiicent slack material to permit the guards to move vertically a considerable distancev relatively to the sides of the body 13, so that when said body is swung toward one side, as shown in Fig. 3, the shield on the opposite side forms a complete wall which prevents the baby from falling out on that side. The advantage resulting from this construction is that the cradle when in its normal position has low sides which makes it very easy and convenient to place the baby in the cradle and attend to its wants, yet if the crib be swung from side to side or if the baby attempts to crawl out of one side or the other, the guard on the same side is raised the swinging movement of the body 13 of said body with by since the center of gravity the baby therein will shirt from side to side as the baby moves from side to side.

and it is for this purpose that I provide the locking means hereinbefore described. It' desired, the end trames 28 of the body 13 may be pivotally and detachably connected to the bottom 29 of the receptacle, as shown in Figs. el and 5, in which it will be seen that the bottom is provided with ears 30 provided with oblique slots 31 in which are located cylindrical projections 32 formed on the end frames 28 so that by disconnecting the end frames from the pivots 15 and each frame may be swung into horizontal position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 5. This will be found advantageous where it is desired to dismount the cradle and pack the same for shipment.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:

1. A cradle having, in combination, a swingingly mounted body, and a lateral rising and falling guard connected thereto and actuated thereby.

2. A cradle having, in combination, a support, a body swingingly mounted thereon, a lateral guard mounted on said support adjacent to one side of said body, and means operatively connecting said guard to said body whereby a swinging movement of said body imparts a vertical movement to said guard.

3. A cradle having, in combination, a support, a body swingingly mounted thereon, two lateral guards located adjacent to opposite sides, respectively, of said body, and means operatively connecting said guards to said body whereby a swinging movement l i l l l l l l l l l l guards to said o said body imparts opposite vertical movements to said guards.

In attending to the baby, it will often be convenient to have the cradle rigidly held,

respectively, ot' said body, and means connecting said bodies to each other whereby a swinging movement of one imparts a swinging movement to the other whereby said guards are moved vertically.

A cradle having, in combination, a support, a body mounted thereon, a lateral rising and falling guard connected to said body and actuated thereby, and a flexible shield connected to said guard and said body and having provision to permit said guard to move vertically.

6. A cradle having, in combination, a support, a body swingingly mounted thereon, two lateral rising and falling guards located adjacent to opposite sides, respectively, of said body, means operatively connecting said body whereby a swinging movement or' said body imparts opposite vertical movements to said guards, and flexible shields connected to said guards, respectively, and said body and having provision to permit said guards to move vertically.

T. A cradle having, in combination, a support, two pivotally connected bodies one of which carries lateral guards located adjacent to opposite sides, respectively, of the other, and a support with which said bodies have swinging connection one above the other below their pivotal connections with each other.
