UNITED STATESv PATENT FFIOE.
NICHOLAS H. RANKIN, OF IPAULINE, NEBRASKA.
SHIRT.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS I-I. RANKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pauline, in the county of Adams and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to shirts and more particularlyI to means for fastening the front of the same, the object being to pro vide a shirt with very novel fastening means whereby the use of buttons is dispensed with.
Another object of my invention is to provide a shirt having a series of loops formed adjacent one of its edges. The other edge being provided with outwardly projecting tongues having oppositely disposed of-sets whereby when the same are forced under the loops the meeting edges of the shirt will be fastened.
Another object of my invention is to reinforce the tongues and the edge of the shirt so that the tongues will be stiffened so as to hold the same in their proper positions after they have been forced through the loops.
`With these objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a front View of a portion of a shirt constructed in accordance with my invention, the lower portion of the same being shown in section. FigQ is a detail section.
In carrying out my improved invention, I employ a shirt A of the ordinary construction having the meeting edges of the front secured back upon themselves in the ordinary manner and in one side of the shirt adjacent the edge is a series of loops B which are stitched as clearlyshown and the other edge of the shirt is provided with outwardly projecting pointed tongues C which are provided with oppositely disposed offset portions C and C2 so that the meeting edges of the shirt can be adjusted with respect to each other as it will be seen that by forcing the tongues through the loops B sov Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 2, 1909.

serial No. 510,834.
that the offset portions C will engage the loops B the edges can be allowed to spread apart and by forcing'the tongues farther through the loops so as to cause the off-set portions C2 to engage the loops the meeting edges will be drawn together closer.
The edge of the shirt with the outwardly projecting tongues is provided with a reinforcing wire D which is bent outwardly to form substantially V-shaped loops D which are adapted to extend within the tongues C, said V-shaped loops having oppositely disposed portions D2 and D3 which are formed by bending the side members of the loops outwardly and backwardly and which are adapted to fit within the off-set portions of the tongues so as to strengthen the same to hold the off-set portions and tongues in their proper positions and it will be seen that by this arrangement the loops will yield so as to allow the tongues to pass under the same so that the off-set portions will engage the loops in order to hold the meeting edges in their proper positions.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a shirt with very novel fastening means which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one which will securely hold the edges of the shirt together and it will also be seen that when it is desired to open the shirt by simply pressing the offset portions of the tongues toward each other the same can be readily passed under the loops.
lVhat I claim is A shirt having its front edges overlapped, one of said edges being provided with outwardly projecting tongues having oppositely disposed oft-set portions, a reinforcing wire arranged in the edge of the shirt provided with V-shaped loops extending into said tongues having projections eX- tending into the oset portions and loops formed adjacent the other edge of the shirt adapted to receive said tongues.
. NICHOLAS I-I. RANKIN.
