TOBACCO-PIPE.

To all whom 'it may concern:

lle it known that I, FnEDiucK TV. SMITH, citizen of the United States. residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobaccolipes, of which the following is aV speciiication.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in tobacco pipes and the invention has for its object a simple construction of pipe, one that embodies a very few parts, that may be readily disassembled and effectively cleaned, so that the pipe may be kept at all times in a hygienic condition, and properly free from accumulations of nicotin and saliva, and producing a cool and sweet smoke.

The lower end et the sleeve 7 is preferably closed, as shown, and the said sleeve is formed intermediate of its ends, and preferably at its upper side. with an aperture 8 extending therethrough and designed to register with the upper end of a longitudinally extending smoke passage 9 formed in the stem 4 and leading upwardly from the nicotin collecting chamber 3.

A swab 10 which may be formed of a rubber or similar disk, is mounted in the saliva collecting chamber that is formed by the sleeve 7, the main portion of said swab being preferably held between metallic washers on the lower end of the rod 11. This rod is designed to be received in the saliva chainber and it is of such a length that the swab l() will be held at the lower end of the saliva chamber when the bit is connected to the upper end of the sleeve or tube 7 which forms said chamber.

In the practical use of a pipe constructed as hereinbefore described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it is clear that the smoke will be drawn through the smoke passage 2 and the nicotin collecting chamber 3 (which may or may not contain a ball of cotton or other librous material to act as a filter) and will pass upwardly through the passage 9 and in through the orifice 8 to the chamber which is formed by the sleeve 7 passing finally out through the bore of the bit 5 to the mouth of the smoker.

In order to clean the pipe it is only neces sary to withdraw the bit and sleeve 7 while the saine are still connected together and to then unserew the bit from the sleeve. which latter operation will obviously ellect the I longitudinal movement of the swab 10 upwardly and outwardly in the saliva collecting chamber and effectually clean the same.

It is manifest that when the pipe is not l desired for use, and is laid away, the bit and l tube 7 may be given a slight turn in one direction or the other, in the stein 4 so as i to carry the orifice 8 out of registry with the upper end of the passage 9, thereby closing the passage and keeping the bowl dry.

Having thus described the invention,what

is claimed as new is:

1. A pipe provided with a saliva chamber and a bit detachably connected thereto, a I

swab located in said chambfgand a rod to which the swab is connected, said rod being i connected to the bit and providing an opening leadmg upwardlyY and outwardly from the salival chamber below the swab to the t rear` wall ot the underneath and distinct from the smoke passage or bore ot the bit.

A pipe provided with a saliva chamber and a bit connected thereto, a swab located in said chamber, and a rod to which the swab is connected, said rod being tubular, and providing an opening leading outwardly from l the saliva chamber below the bit, the upper end of the rod being rearwardlyv curved. as Shown. l

3. A pipe comprising a bowl and stem.v a sleeve fitted in said stem and closed at its lower end and forming below such end a nicotin collecting chamber, said sleeve being formed in its side wall with an orifice, and

the stem being formed with a smoke passage leading from the nicotin collecting chamber to said orifice, a bit having a detachable connection with the sleeve, and a swab carried bv said bit, and designed to fit within the sleeve.

4. A pipe provided with a saliva chamber and a bit detachably connected thereto. a swab located in said chamber. and a detachable rod to which the swab is connected, said rod being connected to the bit and providing an opening leading outwardly from .the saliva chamber.
