Description

ERNEST DAMsfyoF NEWARK., NEW J Easier..
v"Lctte'rs Patent N l. 95,094, dated Sqitcn'lbmf 2l', 1860 amado-ted September 17,1869,
IMPROVEMENT IIN FULLING-MILLS.
. The Schedule referred to iii-these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all'whom-itlmay concern Be it "known that I, Eanns'r Darts', of -N cwark, in
. the county of- Esse-x, and State of N ew Jersey, have invented anew and useful .Improvement in Fulling- Machines; and I hereby declare that the following is a clear, and exact description oi thc'same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming `a part ot this specification, in which- Figure lreprcsents ase'ctional elevation of a' fulling-machine constructed according to my improverncnt,'and
Figurel l2 is aplan view of thesame.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts inV both figures..
This invention relates more especially to machines for fulling felt hats, kbutis' also applicable to machines for other fulling purposes; `and First, `.in the arrangement of rollers within removable`frames, whereby the same may he removed from the trough, when desirable, for cleaning or other purposes.
' Sec-ond,r in the an'angement of a steam-chamber iu connection with-the steam-pipe, and communicatingl with the space behind the rolls, by means of a perforated plate orI covering, whereby the steam being ad# mitted intothe space behind the rolls', and through the interstices 'of the rolls'at the bottom and sides of .thc trough into thehinterlor thereof, is more generally -dilinsed through the trough and ,the articles therein contained, thereby maintaining a .inoreuniform teln- -perature at all points-therein.
, fnllipg-trough B, lnalletst, pivoted levers C. drivingwheel D, and steam-pipe Iii v Near the inner' curvated surface of the trough B are arranged one or more removable frames E, of suitable shape for conforming tothe -curvatureof said .inner surface of the trough, but so as to leave a space, e,
behind them and theiunersurface of. the trough, for
apurposchereinafter explained'.
The frames E are detached from-the trough, so
that they may be removed, when desiiable, for cleaning and other purposes.
' Transversely arranged within these-frames and parallel to each other, arerollersa.` These rollers a form an inner lining or false bottom to the trough, against which the pieces of felt or other articles placed within the-trough B are continually brol'ight in a roll ing or sliding manner, by the beating-action of the mallcts b, during the inning-operation, in' such manner as that, by causingthe turning of the said rolls a ,on their axles, a yielding corrugated surface is obtained, thereby effecting a more perfect fulling of the material than can be eected by a plain or a' fixed corrugated surface. .v
Furthermore, by the yielding nature of vthe surl face, caused by the said turning of the rolls a, less friction is oliered to the revolving or moving around ot' the pieces of felt or other articles, whereby morel rapid revolutions of said material are gained, thereby l, causing the more speedy felling ofthe same, while the said articles are alsol less liable to damage than 1 'when .brought against an unyielding surface within the trough. l
At or near the lower extremity of the'cavity of the ,trough B, and connecting with the' upper extremity of -the steam-pipe '1, is a Steamehamber, "m. Said chamberm communicates with the space e, by means of a perforated upper plate or covering,v n, through which the steam isadnlitted in a diffused manner into said space c behind the rolls, and from thenc'e through the interstices or spaces between the said rolls into 4the cavity of the trough, at allpo'ints of its curvated surface, and through the articles contained therein, there by maintaining the temperature ofthe interior of the trough more uhit'only, at allpoints therein, and also serving by percolation to separate and prevent the packing together of the said'articles while undergoingthe {idling-operation. The invention is operated iu the same manncras the ordinary falling-machine.
AWhat I claim as my invention, and desire to have' secured by Letters Patent, is
` 1. The arrangement, withinthe'trough 13, of removableframes E,for carrying the rollers a, substantially as and `for the purpose herein set forth. 2; The steam-chamber m, 'covered by a`perforated plate, n,an'ange'd withrelation to, and' iu combination' with the rolls a, substantially as shown and described.A
