To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LoUIs KRAMER and Owens BROWN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Shaper Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to shapers, and has for its object to provide an attachment by the means of which material may be turned into various shapes by the adjustmentof different forms to the machine, the forms being secured to the shaft in which the material is secured for rotation, and the forms acting on the knives to produce the desired result. Means are also provided to permit the gradual movement of the material to be treated, against the knives and to hold it yieldingly in this direction.
Still other objects of the invention will be set forth in the following more complete description of the invention.
In this specification we will describe the preferred form of our invention, but we do not limit ourselves thereto as it will be un derstood that we claim all forms and embodiments of the invention which may be held to fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref erence indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention showing it mounted and in position for operation; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 8 is an enlarged plan view showing the attachment withdrawn from the knives; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the invention on the line 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view showing the means which we provide for holding the collar in which the shaft is mounted in the frame; Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view showing the means by which we support the shaft in the collar; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged sectional view showing the means for securing the lever which operates the frame, to the table.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that a frame 1 is pivoted to a table 2 at 3 and that a guide 4: is secured to the table 2. at either end, this guide 4 being Specification of Letters Patent.

adapted to hold the frame 1 in place in all positions which it may assume relatively to the table 2. portion 5 which extends forwardly approximately parallel to the table 2 and to a proj ecting portion 6 of the frame. This portion of the frame is bisected perpendicularl the two halves 7 and 8 being held together by means of a thumbscrew 9, which passes through an orifice in the half 7 and meshes with a screw thread in the half 8, thereby holding the two halves 7 and 8 together as may be desired. A perpendicular orifice is made in the portion 5 of the frame extending through the said division and in this orifice is disposed a collar 10, the collar being adapted to be held at a predetermined height with reference to the frame portion 5, by means of the thumbscrew 9, which is adapted to draw the halves 7 and 8 of the frame together, thereby causing them to bind on the collar 10. Disposed in the collar 10 is a shaft 11, this shaft 11 having an annular groove 12 therein, in which is disposed one or more screws 13, which pass through the collar 10 but do not bind on the shaft 11, to prevent its rotation in the collar 10, the screws supporting the shaft. At the bottom of the shaft and projecting out beyond the bottom of the collar 10 is a projecting screw 14, on which may be disposed a washer-like form 15, the said form 15 being held in place relatively to the shaft 11 by means of a prong 16, which has an inner thread which meshes with the screw 14:. \Vhen the prong 16 is screwed up against the form 15 both the form 15 and the prong 16 are held in position relatively to the shaft. In alinement with the center of the shaft 11 and secured to the projecting frame portion 6 is a center 17, material 18 being held in posi tion by means of the prong 1(5 and the center 17. To the shaft 11 is secured a crank 19 by which the shaft may be rotated.
To the table 2 is pivoted an arm 20, the arm having rack teeth 21 therein in which a pawl 22, which is also pivoted to the table 2, is adapted to engage. The extremity of the arm 20 is secured to the frame 1 by means of a spring 23. A lever 24 is also pivoted to the table, one arm of the lever being connected to the frame 1 by means of a link 25, the link being pivoted to the frame and also to the lever. A handle 26 is socured to the other arm of the lever 24 by The frame 1 has a horizontal means of which the lever may be operated. A pin 27 is introduced into a cavity 28, the pin 27 having a flange 29 secured thereto, near its lower terminal, and to its upper portion, which extends through the top of the lever 24, there is a thumb-piece 30. Between the flange 29 and the upper portion of the lever 2t is disposed a spring 31 which is adapted to hold the lower end of the pin 27 in an orifice 32 in the table 2. This means for holding the lever 2st in a predetermined position. relatively to the table is adapted to enable the operator to secure the frame 1 with its shaft 11 out of engagement with knives or cutters, 33. The cutters or knives 33 are mounted on a shaft 3 f having a pulley 35 and are rotated in the usual manner familiar to those acquainted with the art and the action of these knives 33 on the material 18 is regulated by means of the form 15, various forms being provided to operate the knives in any predetermined manner to finish the material 18 in any desired shape. The cutter knives with their operating mechanism which is operated on by the form 15 are not a part of the invention. It will be understood that the frame 1 may be made in various heights with the frame portions 5 and 6 at any desired distance apart and that the collar 10 and shaft 11 of such a size as will enable them to perform the work which is to be desired, so that the attachment may be used to treat material of various lengths.
In using our invention the frame which is moved away from the cutter knives and the pin 27 is forced, by means of the spring 31 into the orifice 32 in the table 2. The frame by this means is held away from the cutter knives and the desired form 15 is secured in place, after which the material 18 is placed in position and the thumbscrew 9 is unscrewed to permit the collar 10 to descend so that the prong 16 will come in contact with the material 18 and by means of the center 17 and the prong 16 the material 18 will be held in place, after which the thumbscrew 9 is operated to draw the frame parts 7 and 8 together to hold the collar 10 in position. The pin 27 is then lifted and the lever 24 is operated by means of the handle 26 and by this means the frame 1 is drawn toward the cutter knives 33, the spring 23 assisting in this movement of the frame. Greater or less tension of the spring can be obtained by the adjust ment of the pawl 22 with reference to the teeth 21 in the arm 20. At the same time the material 18 comes in contact with the knives 33, the form 15 engages the pattern collar on the knife head and controls the position of the work with reference to the knives so that the knives will cut the material 18 in accordance with the configuration of the form 15. By means of the crank 19 the material 18 and also the form 15 may be rotated so that the knives 33 will operate on all sides of the material 18, their operation being regulated at all times by means of the form 15 disposed thereover. After all sides of the material 18 have been shaped as desired the frame, together with the shaft and the material 18 may be removed from engagement with the knives 33 by means of the handle 26 connected to the lever 24:, which is connected to the frame 1 by means of the link 25.
The table 2 may be secured to a bench 36 in any desired manner.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent:
1. In a shaper attachment, a frame having a bifurcated arm, a sleeve disposed between the members of the bifurcated arm, means adapted for holding the sleeve in a predetermined position relatively to the bifurcated arm, a shaft journaled in the sleeve, a prong and a form detachably secured to the shaft in close proximity to each other, and means adapted for rotating the shaft.
2. In a shaper attachment, a frame, a sleeve, means adapted for securing the sleeve relatively to the frame in a plurality of positions, a shaft with an annular groove disposed in the sleeve, screws mounted on the sleeve which engage the annular groove of the shaft, and a prong and a form detach ably secured to the shaft in close proximity to each other.
3. In a shaper attachment, a frame, a sleeve secured to the frame, a shaft having a thread at one of its terminals j ournaled in the sleeve, a form having an opening adapted to be disposed on the shaft and to abut against a shoulder thereon, and a prong having a thread which meshes with the thread on the shaft, the prong being adapted for pressing the form against the shoulder.
4. In a shaper attachment, a frame, a sleeve secured to the frame, a shaft having an annular groove, a thread at one of its terminals journaled in the sleeve, screws secured to the sleeve, which are disposed in the annular groove, a form having an opening therethrough adapted to be dis- 115 posed on the shaft and to abut against a shoulder thereon, and a prong having a thread which meshes with the thread on the shaft, the prong being adapted for pressing the form against the .shoulder.
5. In a shaper attachment, a table, a frame pivoted to the table, an arm with teeth pivoted to the table, a pawl pivoted to the table, the pawl being adapted for engaging the teeth on the arm, and a spring con- 125 necting the frame with the arm.
6. In a shaper attachment, a table, a frame which is pivoted to the table, a shaft journaled in the frame, an arm pivoted to the table, the arm having rack teeth therein, 130
a pawl which is adapted to engage the rack teeth, and a spring connecting the arm and the frame.
7. In a shaper attachment, a table, a frame pivoted to the table, an arm with teeth pivoted to the table, a pawl pivoted to the table, the pawl being adapted for engaging the teeth on the arm, a spring connecting the frame with the arm, a lever pivoted to the table, and a link connecting the frame with the lever.
8. In a shaper attachment, a table, a frame which is pivoted to the table, a shaft journaled in the frame, an arm pivoted to the table, the arm having rack teeth therein, a pawl which is adapted to engage the rack teeth, a spring connecting the arm and the frame, a lever pivoted to the table, and a link connecting the lever to the frame.
9. In a shaper attachment, a table, a frame which is pivoted to the table, a shaft journaled in the frame, an arm pivoted to the table, the arm having rack teeth therein, a pawl which is adapted to engage the rack teeth, a spring connecting the arm and the frame, the frame being adapted to permit a collar to be disposed therein, a collar, means to secure the collar in a plurality of positions in the frame, a shaft which is rotatably supported in the collar, means to rotate the shaft, and a prong secured to the shaft.
