SAFETY-CLAMP FOR SPECTACLE-CASES, 850.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1910.
Application filed August 26, 1909. Serial No. 514,799.
lowing is a full and clear specification, ref-- erence being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device applied to a spectacle case; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view; and, Fig. a a detailed perspective view of the rotary clamping-post.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple safety pocket clamp for insuring the retention in the pocket of such articles as spectacle-cases, pencils, and fountainpens, and it consists of certain novel features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
The letter a designates the wall of the article to which my device is shown applied, this in the present instance being a spectaole-case. The base-plate b of the clasp is attached thereto in any suitable manner, preferably by rivets 0, and is of course curved or otherwise shaped to fit the surface of the article. The upper end-portion of the baseplate is bent outwardly and downwardly and terminates close to and in front of the base-plate. This bent portion is made resilient to form a spring clamping jaw (Z which normally tends to spring away from the base-plate and which cooperates with the base-plate to form a clamp to clasp the edge of the pocket, as shown in Fig. 1, or any other portion of the garment the device is to be secured to.
Rotatably mounted on the base-plate is a post- 6 which extends outwardly through a hole in the jaw (Z and is provided on its outer extremity with a head 7" which serves as a stop to limit the outward movement of the jaw and which is provided at one end with a nose or projection g which is adapted to cooperate with a cam 72, on the outer face of the jaw to press the jaw inwardly toward the base-plate. The cam h is segmental in shape and is concentric with the axis of the post, and it tapers from its middle toward its ends. At its highest portion it is provided with a transverse notch it. It will be observed that the rotation of the post either to the right or to the left will cause the nose 9 to ride up on the cam and press the jaw toward the base-plate, and when the nose reaches the middle of the cam it will drop into notch it and thus lock the jaw in its clamped position. By a slight exertion upon the head j the nose may be forced out of the notch in either direction and by continued turning the jaw will be permitted to swing normally away from the base-plate and thus release the garment. It will be observed that the head f serves as a thumb-piece for turning the post.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A clamp of the class set forth, comprising a main plate adapted for attachment to an article, a resilient jaw plate connected at one end thereto and having a hole therethrough, a post rotatably carried by the main plate and extending out through the hole in the jaw, a segmental cam having a high middle portion on the face of the jaw surrounding said post and tapered from both its ends toward its middle portion and provided with a notch at said middle portion, and a head on the outer end of said post adapted to cooperate with said cam and its notch.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses this 28rd day of August 1909.
JAMES W. TRULOVE.
