Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. IIAMM, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hubbard IVoods, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

The invention relates to lanterns in which there is employed a reflector, usually of glass, mounted upon the font. 7 The object of the invention is to provide a suitable support for the reflector which, while securely holding it in position, will permit of its convenient insertion and removal.

The invention consists of a structure such as hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan section ofv a lantern taken above the font and reflector; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the font and reflector; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the font showing a different form of reflector support; and Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the device as shown in Fig. 3.

The lantern may take any desired form. The body of the lantern is conventionally shown at 10, its light-emitting lens at 11, and its font at 12. The reflector 18 is shown as circular in form, and in the form of construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 the re flector is supported on apair of standards rising from the font and is held in engagement with these standards by a spring arm engaging it above its horizontal diameter. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, one ofthe supporting standards 14 is located on the vertical diameter of the reflector, the other standard 15 being at one side thereof. Both standards are forked, as shown, with reference to the standard 14 at 16, 17, and with reference to the standard 15 as shown at 18,

19. In this form of construction the spring arm 20 also rises from the font and has its upper end forked, as shown at 21, 22, for receiving the edge of the reflector. Here the longer standard 15 serves to constitute the reflector at one side, while thespring arm constitutes it at the opposite side and also bears it downwardly upon the twostand ards.

In the construction illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, there is a pair of standards 23, 24, rising from the font at opposite sides of the vertical diameter of thereflector 13. Both standards are forked at their upper ends for" receiving the edge of the reflector, and a spring arm 25 is shown as rising from the font on the vertical diameter of the reflector and bearing downwardly upon its upper edge, the upper entl .of the arm being given the forked form for better engagement with the reflector; In this instance the two supports serve to stay thereflector laterally, the oflice of the spring arm being to press it downwardly to its seat.

In 'both forms of construction the reflector may be inserted and removed 'by slightly flexing the spring arm, and when in position is securely held. By mounting the reflector upon the font instead of securing it to the body of the lantern, as is the most common practice, all danger of relative displacement of the lamp burner and reflector is removed.

There is not claimed herein broadly a 'reflector support comprising a bifurcated standard rising from the font of the lantern and a spring-arm for holding the reflector in engagement with the support, for the reason that such claim is made in my copending ap' plication, Serial No. 350,022, filed December 29, 1906, in which "the form of construction 7 herein described and specifically claimed is shown.
