STONEPICK.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 9,465, dated December 14, 1852.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH U. HOUSTON, of Conway, in the county ofFranklin and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have in- Vented a new and useful Improvement on Millstone-Picks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
' The nature of my invention consists in providing the inner side of the hammer of the pick with a guard; which guard will intercept the chips of stone, and protect the hand.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation: I construct my pick with a removable wedge-shaped bit or edge, inserted by sliding into a corresponding recess in the 'face of the hammer and fastened by set screws; but, in order to prevent the chips of stone, which fly when the pick is used, from hitting the hand of the picker, I add a thin metallic guard, on the inner side of the hammer, projecting toward the picker, as
shown at A in the accompanying drawing: and this guard I secure to the hammer by two set screws, as shown at B; this guard I, in general make of hardened steel, and slightly curved, so as to bring the end about on a right line with the face of the hammer, and of sufficient length to insure the necessary protection, generally aboutone sixth the length of the handle.
I do not claim as my invention the mode of constructing the pick, as described, in other respects than as pertains to the guard.
I/Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by `Letters Patent, is-
The addition of a gua-rd to the inner side of the hammer of mill-stone picks, which guard will intercept the chips of stone and protect the hand and person of the picker; using for that purpose the met-allie guard above described, or any other substantially the same, and which will accomplish the same result.
