Application filed April 26, 1909. Serial No. 492,203.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. WVILLIAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vent- Caps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in vent caps.
The object of the invention is to provide a vent cap having improved means for detachably fastening the same to a pipe whereby the cap will be securely held in position and may be readily removed when desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the cap applied to the end of a pipe; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, taken on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the cap which is here shown and is preferably of hemi-spherical shape and when arranged above the upper end of the pipe to which the same is attached, the lower edges of the cap will project over and extend down beyond the upper edges of the pipe and thus protect the same from becoming clogged upwith snow or ice. On the inner side of the cap, adjacent to one edge of the same, is an integrally formed supporting lug 2, which projects downwardly a suitable distance and is provided near its lower end with a transversely disposed slot 4.
When the cap is arranged in position above the upper end of the pipe to which it is applied, the lug 2 is engaged with the side of the pipe and the cap is held at a suitable distance above the upper end of the pipe by means of an ofiset or projection 6 formed on the inner side of the lug, adjacent to its connection with the cap, as shown. After the cap has been arranged, the same is securely fastened to the pipe by means of a clamping band or ring 6, which is in the form of a strap of iron, brass or other suitable material. The ends of the strap 6 are bent outwardly at a suitable angle so that when the strap is engaged with the pipe, said apertured ends will project laterally from the band and will be spaced apart in parallel relation. After the band has thus been engaged with the slot 4 in the lug 2 and with the pipe, a clamping screw 7 is inserted through the apertured ends of the strap or band and with the end of the screw is engaged a nut 8 whereby, when the screw is tightened up in the nut, the ends of the band will be drawn together between the head of the screw and the nut thereby tightly clamping the band into engagement with the pipe and thus supporting and holding the cap in operative position above the upper end of the pipe.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a vent cap, a slotted lug formed thereon and adapted to project therefrom in position to engage the pipe to which the cap is applied, an offset or projection formed on said lug to engage the top of the pipe and thereby support the cap at proper position above the top of the pipe, and means adapted to be engaged with the slot in said lug and with said pipe to secure the cap to the pipe.
2. In a vent cap, a supporting lug projecting therefrom in position to engage the pipe to which the cap is applied, said lug having formed therein a transversely disposed slot or passage, a clamping band arranged in said passage and adapted to engage said pipe, and means to draw the ends of the band together and into tight engagement with the pipe.
