Be it known that 1, ROBERT Sinerninn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cross Connections for Dynamo Electric Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for interconnecting the commutator brushes of dynamo-electric machines, and it has special reference to such means as are adapted to machines embodying a relatively large number of field magnet poles.
The object of my invention is to crossconnect the brushes of dynamoelectric machines by means of solid conducting ring segments of minimum length and having such structural characteristics as shall permit of radial adjustment of any one or all of the brush holder brackets.
In large dynamo-electric machines having commutators, the brush-holder brackets are usually so mounted, at substantially equal intervals around the circumference of a rocker ring, as to extend inwardly and be radially adjustable. As heretofore constructed, the cross-connectors were rigidly fastened to conducting plates which were clamped under each bracket and extended away from the center of the commutator. This construction did not prevent adjustment of the brackets but it necessitated the employment of conducting rings of relatively large diameters and involved considerable labor in fitting and assembling the several parts, especially in machines of large size.
My invention comprises a plurality of ring segments having circumferential slots near their extremities to receive bolts for attaching them to the brush-holder bracket arms, thereby providing for radial adjustment of the arms. By bolting the ring segments directly to the bracket arms, a good electrical connection is maintained, and the rings may be made of a relatively small diameter by fastening them to the arms at points near the brush holders, which further serves to make the construction more rigid, since any tendency of the arms to rotate about their points of support as axes is opposed by the ring segments.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation of a portion of a dynamo-electric machine provided with crossconnecting rings which are constructed in accordance with my invention, and Figs. 2, 3 and at are detail views of the brackets and ring segments which are embodied in the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, a rocker ring 1, which is rotatably mounted on a stationary supporting frame 2, in the usual manner, supports a plurality of positive brushholder brackets 3 and a similar group of negative brackets 4. The brackets 3 and 4 are adjustably mounted upon and insulated from the ring 1, and are alternately connected together by a pair of rings 5 and (3 of conducting material to form positive and negative groups. The ring 5 comprises a plurality of ring segments having slots 7 near their extremities to receive bolts for clamping the segments to bosses 9 with which the brackets 3 are provided.
The ring 6 is composed of segments having end slots to receive bolts for clamping the segments to bosses 11 on the brackets 4: which are located in a circumference having a greater radius than that of the circumference in which the bosses 9 of the brackets 3 are located. The slots in the extremities of the ring segments permit of radial adjustment of the brackets, since the rings automatically adjust themselves to various diam eters.
When the bracket arms are properly adjusted, the rin segments are securely bolted thereto to insure good electrical contact be tween the said parts and provide a rigid structure. When it is desired to readjust the bracket arms, the clamping bolts may be so loosened that they will slide in the slots in the ring segments.
Gross connections of ring segment form may be used with brush holder brackets having structural characteristics which differ from anything here shown, and other variations in size and arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a plurality of radially adjustable brush holder brackets, of cross-connections therefor comprising conducting ring segments having end slots.
2. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a plurality of radially adjustable brush holder brackets, of cross-connections comprising conducting ring segments which are adjustably connected to said brackets.
3. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a plurality of radially adjustable and inwardly projecting brush holder brackets, of cross-connections comprising a pair of segmental conducting rings which are attached to groups of alternate brackets.
l. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a plurality of radially adjustable, inwardly projecting brush holder brackets, of cross-connecting means therefor comprising a pair of segmental conducting rings which are attached to groups of alternate brackets.
5. in a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a plurality of radially disposed and adjustably mounted brush holder brackets, of a pair of cross-connecting segmental rings clamped to said brackets and circumferentially adjustable thereon to permit of radial adjustment of said brackets.
(3. in a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a rotatably mounted rocker ring and a plurality of radially adjustable and inwardly projecting brush holder brackets mounted thereon, of a set of seg mental cross-connecting rings which are mounted on said brackets and are circumferentially adjustable.
7. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a rotatably mounted rocker ring and a plurality of radially adjustable and inwardly projecting brush holder brackets mounted thereon and insulated there from. ot a set of segmental cross-connecting rings detachably clamped to said brackets and circtnnferentially adjustable as the brackets are adjusted radially.
S. in a dynatho-electric machine, the combination with a rotatably mounted rocker ring and a plurality of radially adjustable and inwardly projecting brush holder brackets mounted thereon and insulated there from, oi a set of annular cross-connections substantially concentric with said rocker ring and comprising ring segments of conducting material provided with slots near their ends through which they are bolted to the brackets.
9. The combination with a plurality otl radially disposed and adjustable bracket arms, of a set of annular connections comprising a plurality of rigid, circumferentially'adjustable connecting segments and means for attaching them to said brackets.
10. The combination with an annular surface and a plurality of radially disposed arms mounted thereon, of a set of segmental connecting bars and means for so mounting the bars on the arms that a radial adjustment of said arm is permitted.
1]. In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a rotatably mounted rocker ring and a plurality of radially adjustable, inwardly projecting brush holder brackets, of segmental rings for electrically connecting groups of alternate arms and partially supporting the same.
l2. in a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a rotatably mounted rocker ring and a plurality of radially adjustable, inwardly projecting brush holder brackets, of means for electrically connecting groups of alternate arms and for partially supporting the same, said means comprising a plurality of ring segments having end slots through which the segments are attached to the brackets.
13. in a dynamo-electric machine, the combination with a. plurality of radially adjustable brush holder brackets, of means for partially supporting said brackets and for interconnecting alternate bracket groups, said means comprising ring segments baring end slots and clamping bolts.
