Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH MoALLrs- TER, CHARLES G. ANDERSON, and Bnnr I-I. I-Lxwkins, citizens of the-United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding- Door Fasteners, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to improvements in freight cars and the like and particularly to the means for locking the car door in place when closed.
The object of the invention is to provide a latching device which will lock the door firmly and tightly when closed toprevent rattling.
The invention also relates to certain details of construction which will be. hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in.

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the latching or locking device unlocked to permit the door to be opened. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of a portion of the side of the freight car and the car door showing an outside view of the latching or locking device. Fig. 5 is a vertical section on line b b, Fig. 2, the pivot pin being shown in elevation. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detached view of the hasp hook, partially in section. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detached view of the latching member of the locking device.
In referring to the drawings for the details of construction like numerals designate like parts.
In Fig. 1 a fragment of the side of a freight car of conventional type is shown having a door suspended from a slideway attached to the upper portion of the car side.
The door which is preferably of the sliding type is locked firmly and rigidly in place when closed by a fastening device which is attached to the door and has a wedging latching member that wedge locks itself in'a socket in the door post and compresses the door firmly in its closed position.
The latching device consists of a plate 1, attached to car door and carrying an eye lug 2, a hasp 3 pivoted between ears 4, projecting from the plate and having a slot 5, through which the eye lug 2 is adapted to extend when the hasp is closed against the plate, a wedge locking member 6 which is controlled in its opening and closing movement by the hasp, and a hasp hook '7. The hasp 3 is formed with an enlargement 8 which provides a shoulder 9 adapted to contact with the surface of the locking member 6, as shown in Fig. 2. Both the hasp 3 and the locking member 6 are pivoted by the same pintle 10 between the ears 4, the hasp being thinned down at its inner end 11 and the locking member having a bifurcated inner end 12, between which the thinned inner end 11 is fitted, see Fig. 4. The outer extension of the locking member has a lateral enlargement 13 the inner surface 14 of which is beveled or inclined as shown in Figs. 2, -3 and 7 which fits against the beveled surface 15 of a socketed plate 16 set in the door post 17 of the car side as shown in Fig. 2.
The plate 16 is preferably set flush in the surface of the door post and is secured in place with screws 18 or other suitable fastenings, see Fig. 5.
A portion of the door sheathing is cut away beneath the plate 1, as indicated at 19 in Figs. 2, 3 and 5 if suflicient size to permit the locking member 6, to seat flush within the line of the inner surface of the door as shown in Fig. 3 and thus allow the door to be moved freely open.
The hasp hook 7 is pivoted at one end to an intermediate portion of the hasp by a pin 20 and is so located that its bent portion may be turned down through the eye in the lug 2 as shown in Fig. 4. The end of the bent portion is provided with an opening 21 to receive a car seal 22, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be noted that the lock is of a peculiar type, inasmuch as it looks against the door post and tends to force the door firmly into its closed position and also by reason of the complementary beveled surfaces 14 and 15, to draw the door against the car side as shown in Fig. 2. By this means the car door is Wedge locked in place and held rigidly both against any opening movement orlateral movement tending to produce rattling.
The car side has the usual opening which is adapted to be closed by the car door. The car door 23 is preferably hung from its top from the car being slidably suspended from rails attached to the car side.
The advantage of this improvement resides in the novel wedge lock.
l Ve claim as our invention:
1. The combination with a car having an opening and a door adapted to close said opening, of a lock mechanism including a plate attached to the car door, a hasp pivoted to the plate and having a shoulder, a locking member against which the shoulder of the hasp is adapted to contact and provided with a wedge shaped end, and a complementary wedge socket in the door post.
2. A locking device for cars or the like comprising a plate, a hasp pivoted to said plate and having a shoulder, a pivotal locking member adapted to be engaged by the shoulder of the hasp and provided with a wedge shaped outer end, and a complementary wedge socket in the door post adapted to coact with the pivotal locking member to force the door against the side of the car.
3. The combination with a door post having a socket plate therein, one side of which is beveled, of a lock having a pivotal locking member provided with a projection adapted to fit in the socket plate and having a corresponding beveled side, a hasp provided with a shoulder adapted to engage the pivotal locking member and means for maintaining the hasp in locking position.
4. The combination with a door post having a socket plate therein, of a door, a plate attached to the door and provided with lugs, a hasp pivoted to the lugs on the plate and having a slot, a locking member also pivoted to the lugs on the plate and actuated in its movement into locking position with the socket plate by the inovinent of the hasp, an eye lug on the plate adapted to register with the slot in the hasp, and a hook member pivoted to the hasp and adapted to ongage the eye lug, substantially as described.
