Description

cimiteri @gelaten N SOLOMON METZ-GER, OF'NEWBERRY, PENNSYLl/LNIA.-
Letters Patent No. 94,123, dated August 24, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN VEG-ETABLE-CUTTERS.
The Schedule referred to :ln these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may conce/rn- Be it known that I, SOLOMON Mn'rzenn, of Newberry, in the countyof Lycoming, and in the'State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vegetable-.Gutters ;and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had'to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which` Figure l is a vertical lon it-udinal section; and
Figure 2 is a plan view o my improved'devce.
Letters of .like name and kind refer to like parts in each of thefgures.
My invention has for its object the shredding or slicing of cabbage; and
1t consists in the construction and arrangement of the sevelal parts of the device, and also in the' elnployment of a double-edged knife, or cutter, having a reciprocating motion, upon which the'cabbage is caused to press by its own weight, by which means a thin shaving or slice of said cabbage is removed at each motion of said cutter.
In the annexed drawing- A A represent two side pieces, secured together by two cross-pieces, B B, the whole forming thezfx'ame 0f the machine. v
Secured to the upper side of said frame is a box or hopper, O, for containing the cabbage, open at both top'and bottom, directly beneath which is placed the cutter-head .D, its edges being contained within grooves in the inner face of the side pieces, so as lto permit said head to slide longitudinally.
A transverse slot or opening, d, is provided in the head, directly above-which is placed a doublefedged knife or cutter, E, having its edges beyond the sides of said slot, and inclinedslightly upward, as shown in g. l.` p l I Y It will -be Vreadily seen, that if now a' cabbage is placed within the hopper, and a reciprocating motion given to the'cutter-head, at each motion of the same, the forward edge of the cutter will shave off a thin slice from the cabbage, which, passing beneath said cutter, will fall through the slot.
In order to secure the desired motion of the cutter, a crank-shaft, F, is joumalled within one end of the frame, and connected with the cutter-head by means of a pitman, G, pivoted at one end to the crank, and
at the other end to said cutter-head. y
Upon the outer end of said crank-shaft is a pinion,
H, whichmeshes with and is operated bya gearwheel, I, pivoted upon the side of the frame.
A handle, i, secu-redto one of the spokes of said gear, permits it to be readily turned by the operator. vA s thus constructed and alranged, if a cabbage be placed within the hopper, and the crank turned, said .cabbage will be speedily reduced to shreds Aof a uniform size, the use of 'said machine causing a great saving of time and labor, and producing a; far better result than has heretofore been possible.
Haw'ng thus fully set forth the nature and merits of luy'invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described vegetable-cutter, consisting of `the frame A A, B and-B, the hopper O, the cutterbead D, provided with the slot 'd and double-cutterE, the crankshaft F, the pitman G, the pinion H, andI gear-wheel I, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
1n testimony that I claim the foregoiu g, I have hereunto set my hand, this 20th day of J uly, 1869.
SOLOMON METZGER.
