DIVIDED' BOLT.
Application flled May 11, 1909. Serial No. 495,253.
.vented certain new aiid useful Improvements in Divided Bolts; of which the following 1s a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastening de-- vices of the class known as bolts'and nuts;
and the object thereof is to provide fastening devicestof this class particularly designed for use under circumstancesand conditions wlnchrender it impossible to pass usual manner, but under which it is neces sary to pass the head itself of the bolt through the aperturein which the bolt fits.
- The invention consists of a threaded bolt avhich is divided longitudinally and one of the parts of which is provided with a longi- .-'tudinal groove and the other with a rib or head which fits therein, each part of the bolt being also provided at one end with a later- :ally directed head member.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which;
Figure l is a sectional view showing my improved bolt and the method of its operation, Fig. 2 a view similar to Fig. l but on an enlarged scale and showing only a part of the construction shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 a side view of the bolt detachedand showing the separate parts disconnected,
one of the parts bein also partially in sec tion, and gl ig. 4 a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
ln l ig. l ol? the accompanying drawing I have shown at w a closed receptacle to which is secured a collar or band '1) having a flange IF, and the collar or band I) is secured. to the receptacle (6 by means of my improved fastening device.
In the practice of my invention, I provide a bolt 0 divided longitudinally into two separate parts 0 said parts being provided in their adjacent faces,- one with a longitudinal groove 0 and the other with a. longitudinal rib c adapted to fit in said groove, and each of the parts of the bolt is provided at one end thereof with a laterally directed head member 0*", and the head members 0 are preferably provided at their inner faces with roughened or serrated surfaces a forming teeth or projections which bear on the inner wall of the receptacle a or otherarticle in connection with which the bolt is used so as to prevent the head members from slipping or turning when the bolt is in use.
In practice, the holes (Z in the collar 1) and receptacle a through which the bolts are passed are made of greater dimensions than the transverse dimensions of said bolts as clearly shown in Fig.'2, and in connecting said collar with the receptacle a the head member 0 of one part of the bolt is first passed through the holes (I and the head member 0'' of the other part .of' the bolt is then passed through, and the nut e is then screwed onto the bolt, and a washer f may first be placed on the bolt if desired. In order to facilitate this operation, the bolt may be made of considerable length so that the separate parts thereof may be held in position to permit of the screwing on of the nut, and after this is done the outer end of v the bolt may be cut off.
I am aware that divided bolts are not broadly new, but my invention consists in a divided bolt, the separate parts of which are made as herein shown and described.
Having fully described my invention, what Specification of Letters Patent- Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is':-
1. The herein described fastening device comprising a threaded bolt divided longitudinally into two separate parts, said parts being provided in their adjacent faces, one with a longitudinal groove and the other with a longitudinal rib adapted to fit in said groove and a nut adapted to be screwed on to said bolt.
2. The herein described fastening device-" f 100 comprising a threaded bolt divided longitudinallyinto two separate parts, said parts being provided in their'adjacent faces, one
with a longitudiiml; groove and the-0 tl1er my invention.
